Paularino looks for arts magnet status
In an effort to pull up Paularino Elementary School’s test scores, campus officials want to look at becoming the district’s second magnet school.
In her proposal to bring the K-6 Costa Mesa campus out of Program Improvement, Interim Principal Bonnie Swann said Paularino wants to become an arts magnet and already has several teachers who are strongly dedicated to the arts.
“I think it’s wonderful that they’re the first school that got out of the box and came in with something different than [Response to Intervention],” Trustee Dana Black said during the meeting. “Pick a magnet and go for it, as far as I’m concerned.”
The proposal asks for staff to be allowed to look into what it takes to become an arts magnet school, for funding to continue to send staff to Arts Advantage Training put on by the Orange County Department of Education, and for additional staff for band, choir and school plays.
The school is also looking into incorporating art in reading and math standards, and expanding student performance opportunities.
“Art is what will keep our students in school,” the proposal states.
Davis Magnet School, the district’s first magnet campus, is a science-, math- and technology-focused K-6 that replaced the former grade 4-6 Davis Elementary School.
