Costa Mesa police continued their search Monday for suspected Santa Ana gang members involved in a weekend beating.

After responding to a fight at Shiffer Park about 3:45 p.m. Sunday, officers found an unconscious man.

The victim, who is allegedly affiliated with a rival Santa Ana gang, went to the park on Bear Street to play handball with two friends who are not involved in gangs, police said.

The rival gang members assaulted the victim at the park by kicking and punching him in the head, police said.

The victim was taken to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana in serious condition, but has since improved to stable condition.

As of Monday, police said he continued to receive treatment and was recovering.

Police said the seven or so suspected assailants fled in two Lincoln or similar make SUVs, one black and one white, and in a dark-colored Chevy Impala with chrome wheels.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Officer Jason Chamness at (714) 754-5055 or the Investigative Services Bureau at (714) 754-5205.
