Volunteers clean up local beaches

Teens and staff from the Boys & Girls Club of Laguna Beach teamed with local James Pribram, Hearts of Montage, Zero Trash and One World One Ocean to clean up local beaches Sept. 15 as part the California Coastal Cleanup day, according to a news release.

About 70 volunteers participated. They started at the Montage Laguna Beach resort and spread out to surrounding beaches. Teens recorded items that were cleaned up and mostly recyclable, which they will send in to the Ocean Conservancy to become part of the Ocean Trash Index, which shows how much trash is found along coasts all over the world, the release said.

Free adult ESL Classes being offered

The La Playa Center has begun its English as a second-language classes at the Boys & Girls Club of Laguna Beach.

The classes are free and are offered from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday through Thursday at the club, 1085 Laguna Canyon Road. Childcare is provided as well as a weekly food distribution, according to a news release.

Students receive highest Eagle Scout awards

Eight local young men earned Eagle Scout awards from the Boy Scouts of America, the highest honor within the organization, according to a news release.

The recipients are Trenton Caserio, Cole Kesler, Michael Kimball and his cousin Mitchell Kimball, Cristian Menes, James Micheli, and Noah and Wesley Olsen.

All are members of Troop 38 as well as students at Laguna Beach High School.

The awards ceremony took place Sept. 23 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Park Avenue. A crowd of 150 attended the ceremony, which included Mayor Jane Egly, who spoke about the valuable service that these Scouts have provided to the community of Laguna Beach.

Scott McKean, the El Camino Real District commissioner, gave the Eagle Charge and counseled the recipients to “let their light shine as if it were a beacon on a hill.”
