Costa Mesa to honor military personnel with banners
The city of Costa Mesa is looking for applications for its new military banner program that recognizes active-duty service members with at least six months of continuous service.
The honoree must be in the U.S. Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, Navy or National Guard.
The banners can also honor a service person who’s a spouse, mother, father, daughter, son, brother, sister, grandson or granddaughter of a Costa Mesa resident, according to a city news release.
“Our goal is to honor and recognize those men and women who are currently serving our country and call Costa Mesa home,” city CEO Tom Hatch said in a prepared statement.
City staff will review the $300 banners, which, if approved, will be placed along Fair Drive between Fairview Road and Newport Boulevard. They will remain up for the length of the honoree’s service.
Costa Mesa residency must be proven through a recent utility bill, driver’s license or other form of identification.
Cities such as Fountain Valley, Huntington Beach and Diamond Bar have similar programs, according to the news release.
The city’s adopted unit, the 1st Battalion, 5th Marines, will also have banners along Fair.
The city is also seeking donations to support the banner program. Money can be sent to city of Costa Mesa c/o Military Banners, P.O. Box 1200, Costa Mesa, CA 92628-1200.
