Homeless man found dead [Updated]

A 33-year-old homeless man was found dead Tuesday morning in a gazebo at a Laguna Beach park, police said.

The death was reported to the Laguna Beach Police Department at 8:35 a.m. by a fellow transient, who told officers the man was not moving and couldn’t be awakened, Sgt. Louise Callus wrote in an email.

The two were sleeping in the gazebo at Jahraus Park off Cliff Drive. The man who died came to Laguna from Colorado and Georgia, she said.

The coroner’s office found no evidence of foul play, and the cause of death is under investigation, Callus said.

The man’s name was not released, but he was known to the Laguna Beach community outreach officer and has been in the community for several months.

His remains will be released by the coroner’s office pending notification of next of kin.

News of the local death came the same day that two homeless people in their 50s were found dead in separate locations in Costa Mesa.

Temperatures plummeted to 43 degrees Monday night, although police wouldn’t speculate whether that was related to the deaths.

There was no unusual circumstances surrounding their deaths, Costa Mesa police said.

The city and outreach workers there provided motel vouchers and rides to shelters to help the homeless during the cold snap.

Laguna Beach’s Friendship Shelter Executive Director Dawn Price said the well-being of those in need is a concern year-round.

She hasn’t seen any increase in demand as temperatures have cooled, but extra cold-weather shelters are open this time of year.

“There is a place for people to go to get out of the cold,” she said.
