Boy who gave peers pot brownie is arrested
Police on Thursday arrested a 12-year-old Pomona Elementary School student who allegedly brought a marijuana-laced brownie to school two days earlier.
When the student went to school Thursday, administrators questioned him and found a small bag of marijuana in his backpack, Costa Mesa Lt. Greg Scott said. Administrators confiscated the drug and notified Costa Mesa detectives, according to Scott.
However, a school spokeswoman said the child has not been back to campus since Tuesday.
Administrators searched the backpack when they realized it was still on campus Wednesday, thinking police had taken it with them, school spokeswoman Laura Boss said. The principal Wednesday alerted police of the drugs left over from the incident Tuesday, according to Boss.
At 2:15 p.m. Thursday, detectives arrested the sixth-grader at his home in Costa Mesa on suspicion of possession of marijuana on campus, a misdemeanor, Scott said.
He was later released to a parent, according to police.
On Tuesday, seven Pomona sixth-graders were taken to the hospital after sharing a marijuana-laced brownie that the arrested student allegedly brought to campus, according to officials.
The student admitted he brought the treat from home when officials questioned him, according to school administrators.
He shared the brownie with other students and told them it contained marijuana after one asked why it tasted odd, according to fire officials.
The six boys and one girl were taken to Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach for observation and released to their parents, Boss said Tuesday.
