A man used a baseball bat or large stick to attack a Costa Mesa resident Monday afternoon near Newport Boulevard and 22nd Street, police said.

A bystander saw the assault and called police to say she witnessed someone being hit atop the head with the weapon at about 3 p.m., said Lt. Greg Scott of the Costa Mesa Police Department.

Police and paramedics responded and found a 52-year-old man with large lacerations on his head, according to police.
