An after-school business club at El Morro Elementary School has raised the most money in its history for childhood cancer.

Teacher Jennifer Carlson’s Lemonade Business Club earned $408 by selling more than 400 cups at its lemonade stand March 6.

Students paid $1 per cup during lunch.

The amount beat last year’s total of $250, and benefited Alex’s Lemonade Stand, an organization dedicated to finding a cure for pediatric cancer.

“So proud of these kids and their hard work making business plans, marketing material and posters all for an incredible cause,” Carlson wrote in an email.

Students studied fundraising, marketing, advertising, public relations, cost-benefit analysis and other companies with a philanthropic focus, and also designed a new logo. Apparel company The Soul Project of Laguna Beach donated shirts for the kids to wear.

Alex’s Lemonade Stand is a national charity named for Alexandra Scott, who died in 2004 at age 8 from neuroblastoma, a type of pediatric cancer.

Since 2000, Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation has raised more than $75 million for childhood cancer research and supporting families of children receiving treatment.
