Metrolink lines in Orange County closed after death on tracks

Metrolink lines in Orange County remained closed Friday morning after a freight train fatally struck a person on the tracks near the Norwalk station, officials said.

The victim was struck about 4:45 a.m. by a Burlington Northern Santa Fe train, which shares tracks with Metrolink, Metrolink spokesman Jeff Lustgarten said.

Details about the victim were not immediately known, but Whittier police are investigating, Lustgarten said.

The incident shut down all Orange County lines except for one at the 91 Freeway in the Inland Empire, where Lustgarten said trains must travel “at greatly reduced speeds.” The closure forced commuters to find other ways to get to work -- Lustgarten said buses were being provided to transport passengers to Union Station.

“We strongly advise people heading northbound from Orange County to L.A. to find alternative means and it can get extensive,” he said. “The only saving grace is this is a Friday and there are usually less commuters.”

Some Amtrak lines that share the tracks were also affected.
