Official: ‘No active flames’ in Laguna brush fire
Firefighters have a good handle on a several acre fire that broke out at Coast Highway and Nyes Place on Sunday, according to Orange County Fire Authority spokeswoman Lynnette Round.
About 150 firefighters battled the three- to five-acre blaze that was above Ruby’s Diner, 30622 Coast Hwy., said Round, who was dispatched about 11:50 a.m. to the area.
Firefighters will keep an eye on the area throughout the night, she added.
“There are no active flames; they are doing a great job foaming and putting water on hot spots,” Round said.
Round said police told her that a voluntary evacuation by authorities will be lifted around 8 p.m. Sunday.
There are still a lot of hose lines and equipment and police don’t want residents going in and out of the neighborhood for their safety, she said.
Earlier in the day, a helicopter was dropping water on the flames and about 20 homes on Nyes Place were in possible danger.
One firefighter was injured and transported to a hospital, Round said, but she didn’t have more details.
The cause of the fire is under investigation and will take at least a day before a cause is determined, according to Round.
“We did see some power lines down, but we’re not sure if that started the fire. Investigators are looking into it,” she said earlier in the day.
