Mailbag: Coronavirus victims deserve compassion but health experts need to provide Costa Mesa assurances

Compassion is a quality that must be nurtured in our communities, not only for the victims of this mysterious disease, but also for the many residents who are alarmed by the potential spread of this deadly virus.

More information and fact-based assurances by healthcare experts must be available before we can be at ease with placing patients of the coronavirus in our neighborhoods.

Harley Rouda is strong on environment

As a Newport Beach resident, I worry that sea level rise will decimate property values and eventually make our harbor islands and peninsula beach communities uninhabitable.

Rep. Harley Rouda (D-Laguna Beach) understands that this problem is partly caused by carbon emissions from burning coal, oil and gas. Consequently, he is promoting a real solution by cosponsoring a bipartisan bill, which, if enacted, will reduce emissions while protecting our economy.

Out-of-town money is trying to defeat Foley

We have outsiders trying to negatively influence the election of Costa Mesa Mayor Katrina Foley for California Senate District 37 and we should ignore their deceptive political mailers.

I have received four of these mailers. Two were paid for by a lobbying organization in San Rafael. Two others were paid for in part by a lobbying firm in Sacramento.

I don’t know why these outsiders are trying to negatively influence our election, but I am still going to proudly vote for Foley for Senate.

What happened to statesmanship?

In today’s divisive political environment at the national level, nonpartisanship barely exists, if at all.

There is a word, not often heard today, that describes the type of leader who brings people together, and whose accomplishments are exemplary.

That word,”statesman,” represents the type of leader we should seek. But statesmanship has all but disappeared from the national political landscape.
