Mailbag: Another traffic light in canyon is bad idea

Traffic conditions in Laguna Canyon are unpredictable, as those who travel it daily know all too well.

Even mid-afternoon traffic in the canyon can back up before Big Bend coming into town and to the festival grounds leaving town. The last thing we need is another traffic light to further delay traffic.

Yes, the recent death of the young art student was tragic. And yes, I agree that crossing conditions at the Laguna College of Art + Design are dangerous and untenable.

But another traffic light is not the best approach. Would it not make more sense to install a pedestrian bridge over the canyon or a subterranean walkway under the canyon to provide a means for pedestrians to cross?

What better memorial to this student than an artistic exterior bridge or interior tunnel design created by LCAD students?

Yes, this plan would be a little more expensive, but it would eliminate the need to have cars stop at yet another light. It would probably reduce rear-end accidents from the chain reaction of stopping cars in both directions. And, most importantly, there would be no risk of pedestrians being hit by inattentive drivers running the red light.

Clapping between movement is a no-no

The Laguna Art Museum has wonderful concerts on the second Thursday of every month, and I have been attending them all.

The musicians are always excellent and very professional, but the audience leaves something to be desired. Many people don’t seem to know that compositions may have several movements, and the applause should be held until the end of the last one. You can tell when the whole composition is over because the musicians look at the audience and usually stand.

Clapping between movements is disconcerting to the musicians and shows ignorance on the part of the audience.
