Community & Clubs: Interfaith Council gears up for busy season
The Newport-Mesa-Irvine Interfaith Council fall schedule kicks off Sept. 19 with the New Clergy Luncheon at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, 1441 W. Balboa Blvd., Newport Beach.
The subject is “Self Care: Renewing your Body, Mind and Spirit.” The presentation will include information and resources for clergy and the layperson. The presenter is the Rev. Julie Elkins, of the First United Methodist Church of Costa Mesa.
Clergy new to their congregation in the past 12 months or who have never attended an Interfaith Council luncheon are guests! For all others, the cost is $10 with reservation, $15 without. Send reservations to nmiinterfaith@aol.com.
On Oct. 17 the meeting focus will be resources for the homeless, with 15 to 20 agencies that provide services to the homeless. The luncheon will be at 11:45 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 801 Dover Drive, Newport Beach.
The annual Interfaith CROP Walk starts at 1 p.m. Oct. 28 at Our Lady Queen of Angels, 2046 Mar Vista Drive, Newport Beach.
So far participants are: St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, Irvine United Congregational Church, Christ Church by the Sea, Harbor Christian Church, Islamic Education Center of Orange County, Stand up for Kids, Our Lady Queen of Angels, Temple Bat Yam, Fairview Community Church, First Drops, Orange Coast College’s Puente Club and men’s basketball team, First United Methodist Church of Costa Mesa, Christ Our Redeemer Church, and Baha’is of Costa Mesa.

Hearts & Hands, a day of hands-on service, will be Nov. 17, with dozens of faith communities and more than 500 youth and adults participating.
At 7 p.m. Nov. 18 is the 13th annual Interfaith Council Celebration of Thanksgiving. It is an hour of inspiration filled with readings, prayers and music from a variety of faith communities. It is a family event. Admission is two cans of food for Share Our Selves and Families Forward.

LIONS STAND UP FOR STAND DOWN
Several local Lions Clubs volunteered to work at the second annual Orange County Stand Down from Aug. 17 to 19 at the Army Reserve Center in Costa Mesa.
The District 4 L4 Lions Sight and Hearing Van was on site to give vision and hearing screening to veterans. Harbor Mesa Lions members Gina Stansbury and Joan Parks chaired the screening project with Lions from their club, Huntington Beach, Orange and Brea participating. District Gov. PJ Smith also volunteered for this event.
“These veterans have sacrificed so much for us. The least we can do is offer our help one weekend to make their lives better,” Parks said.
The veterans also received health screening, clothing, housing, food, dental and legal assistance, while enjoying musical entertainment and a soft place to land for the weekend.
