Mailbag: Bike riders, skateboarders must show more caution

Note to parents who have children riding bikes and skateboards to school:

While driving last week in Newport Heights, a number of commuters and I were taking our respective turns at a four-way stop sign. As the other cars stopped to allow me to take my turn, three young girls flew through the stop sign to my right, causing me to immediately slam on my brakes.

Fortunately, most of us are hyper-aware of the kids during the morning and afternoon commute, but I strongly encourage parents to remind their children that they are not exempt from adhering to stop signs, no matter what form of transportation they are using.

Injured runners should try MELT

Re. “Commentary: My running group will heal, return,” (Jan. 14): Having been in fitness for over 30 years (Jazzercise, Pilates and now MELT), I am mystified as to why these wonderful people who run and deal with constant wear and tear on their bodies haven’t tried the MELT Method.

Not one of them is taking care of their dehydrated connective tissue, and not one of them is enjoying a body that can work with less effort and more stability and balance.

They are welcome to join me at the Costa Mesa Senior Center (ages 50 and up) for free at 1:30 p.m. on Mondays and Thursdays.

Representatives should help, not hinder

Why can’t Congress extend long-term unemployment benefits?

Fiscal conservatives like my House Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-Costa Mesa) had been refusing to even bring the bill up for a floor vote unless it is “paid for” by other cuts to other social programs.

They have taken this anti-democratic position while pumping up the bloated military budget and protecting the taxpayer ripoff F35 program.

Posturing and pandering for mid-term elections does not help the constituents, who deserve better.
