Mailbag: Bunnies are set in stone so leave them be
Re. “Councilman-elect Peotter: Newport Civic Center ‘bunnies’ should go,” I am resting much easier this morning, knowing that my relatives in Newport Beach are in the hands (figuratively) of a new, conservative City Council-elect that is already seeking to protect them from the army of concrete bunnies that has been trying to invade their hearts and minds from the vantage of the Civic Center hill.

Those bunnies need to hop
Thank you, Scott Peotter. I knew there was a reason I voted for you! It’s amazing how a little common sense can go a long way. Keep it up!

Not everyone dislikes the bunnies
Re. our newly elected city councilman Scott Peotter’s comment, “I haven’t met anyone yet that likes the bunnies.” Well, I like the bunnies, and I am sure there are others who do as well. Not everyone has to like the bunnies.
I think Mr. Peotter should focus his time on more important city matters than planning for the removal of the bunnies. The bunnies are not hurting anyone or taking up space at the Civic Center needed for something else. Furthermore, children and others do enjoy them.
The election campaign is over. Let the bunnies be!

Children enjoy those hares
Granted, the concrete bunnies were a tremendous waste of money but the children enjoy them, so leave them be. If this is the only issue you see in Newport Beach and it is a step backward, it is also expressive of your political views, which is why I don’t know anyone who voted for you! You did give us a good laugh over our morning coffee, however. For that, we thank you!

Pick up those campaign signs
It is now over a week since the election, and the candidates have not picked up their signs that they posted. Perhaps they feel entitled to expect that the city will pick up their signs for them. Seems to me that if they post a sign they are responsible to pick it up.

Why allow ‘ugly’ development?
While shopping at Trader Joe’s on West 17th Street in Costa Mesa recently I was shocked to see a singularly ugly building nearing completion across 17th. The employees at Trader Joe’s told me that a whole vacant lot of these eyesores is going to be erected. Poor Costa Mesa deserves better.
Where is the overall plan of architectural design? Do we simply give the contractors carte blanche as to their plans? We certainly need to tighten up our regulations in City Hall. We are throwing up more and more multistory, high-density buildings; at least we might pay a little more attention to visual effects.
