Around Town: Enjoy wine, help single parents

In its ongoing effort to improve the world around us, the Soroptimists of Huntington Beach will hold a wine tasting and fundraiser to benefit the Huntington Beach Project Self-Sufficiency Foundation on Feb. 20 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., with flights of wine available until 8:30 p.m.

The event will be held at the Cielo Mare Ballroom at the Hilton Waterfront Beach Resort, 21100 Pacific Coast Highway. Cost is $25 per person and includes four wine flights, tasty bites and complimentary valet parking. Information and reservations: (714) 845-8000 or (714) 845-8494.

The best part of all this wine and socializing is that the event will help low-income single parents gain economic independence by supporting Project Self-Sufficiency. The Huntington Beach organization helps men and women finish school and get a career started.

The program is for people who have at least one minor child and some source of income, and who live, work or attend school in Huntington Beach or are referred from an Orange County shelter.

Getting Psychic for the Pups

Waggin’ Trails, a Huntington Beach rescue organization that whisks animals from kill shelters off to no-kill shelters in other states, is holding a fundraiser.

We wrote in December about the organization, which has saved about 540 dogs since it was founded by transporting about 30 dogs a month to out-of-state shelters.

The fundraiser is interesting in itself. Bonnie Whiting will hold a two-hour Psychic Medium Show that should include connecting the audience with pets and loved ones in the afterlife. Along with her extrasensory abilities, Whiting is the founder of Alternative Pet Rescue.

The event is $25 and will be Jan. 31 at the Huntington Beach Central Library, 7111 Talbert Ave.

Big-time props for Graham Jameson

Cal Lutheran sophomore communications major Graham Jameson, whose family lives in Huntington Beach, is a member of the lighting and sound crew for the university’s production of “The Trojan Women.”

The performance will be presented during the Region VIII Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival. “The Trojan Women” will be presented twice on Feb. 14 at the Los Angeles Theatre Center.

Judges will select four to six of the best and most diverse productions from eight regional conferences to be showcased at the national festival in April at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.

A Fusion of dance for all audiences

The Huntington Beach Academy for the Performing Arts is holding its annual faculty choreographed dance concert, Fusion.

Fusion blends ballet, modern jazz and tap and according to its news release will appeal to dance aficionados and newcomers alike.

The three performances will be 7:30 p.m. Feb. 1 and 2, and 2 p.m. Feb. 2 at the Huntington Beach Union High School District Historic Auditorium and Bell Tower, 1905 Main St.
