Paul, Jones earn top honors

Chris Paul and Keaton Jones nabbed the top two honors and Laguna Beach dominated the selections on the 2011 All-Orange Coast League baseball team. The Breakers also put three members on the all-league softball squad.

Paul and Jones, both seniors, were selected as Most Valuable Player and Pitcher of the Year, respectively. Paul batted .495 with six home runs and 49 runs batted in. He had a 10-2 pitching record with 80 strikeouts and a 0.99 earned-run average. Jones went 7-0 on the mound with six saves.

Seven other Breakers — Erik Peruzzi, Austin Paxson, Larry Stewart, Travis Clawson, Steven Harrison, Jackson Rees and Alex Iannoti, made the all-league baseball team.

“They are all very deserving,” Laguna baseball Coach Jeff Sears said. “Chris and Keaton both had outstanding senior years.”

Laguna, which returned to varsity action on the softball diamond in 2011, placed a trio of sophomores — Haley Putnam, Katie Anderson and Corey Kent — on the all-league softball team.

Laguna teams ready for district play

Laguna Beach Little League announced its four All-Star teams and a 9-year-old tournament team for the 2011 postseason.

Laguna Beach will field teams in the District 55 All-Star Tournament in the Majors (12-year-old), 10/11-year-old, 9/10-year-old and Junior divisions. District All-Star play starts June 25.

A fifth Laguna Beach team, a 9-year-old tournament squad, will play against other District 55 teams in a separate double-elimination tournament that begins Saturday and runs through Thursday in Aliso Viejo. The winner of the tournament advances to compete for a Section title against District 68.

Laguna plays its first game at 1 p.m. Saturday against Northwood at Woodfield Park in Aliso Viejo).

“I believe our team will be very completive in this 9-year -old tournament, as each player on the roster is highly skilled and made big contributions to their respective AAA teams throughout the season,” Laguna Manager Taylor Pillsbury said. “Our prospects in the first game are particularly good as our starting pitcher, Blake Pivaroff, is one of the top 9-year-old pitchers in the county.”

Pillsbury said that Pivaroff struck out 13 batters in a recent District 55 Tournament of Champions game.
