UCI’s Fontein lauded

UC Irvine junior goalkeeper Andrew Fontain was named Big West Conference Defensive Player of the Week in men’s soccer for the third time this season on Monday.

Fontein allowed one goal in 200 minutes to lead UCI to a pair of wins and back into first place in the conference standings.

He made three saves in a 0-0 tie against visiting UC Santa Barbara on Saturday, after helping the No. 7-ranked Anteaters (13-1-3, 6-0-2 in conference) post a 2-1 win at UC Riverside on Wednesday.

Fontein’s shutout against UCSB was his 11th of the season. His goals-against average (0.40 per game) is among the national leaders.

UCI can clinch the Big West with a win in two conference games this week.
