College Roundup: Vanguard men’s soccer wins in overtime against Ottawa University

The Vanguard University men’s soccer team outlasted Ottawa University (Ariz.) 6-5 in overtime Saturday on the road in a Golden State Athletic Conference match.

Daniel Moreno scored the match-winning goal in the 95th minute for the Lions (10-4-1, 2-3-1 in conference), who rallied from a 3-0 first-half deficit. Kobe Franks and Andrew Robles each scored twice for Vanguard, which got another goal from Alex Gonzalez and assists from Gonzalez, Marc Trejo and Stewart Alvayero.

Vanguard, which has won three straight matches, hosts Menlo College on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.

UC Irvine 2, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 0: Christian Gutierrez scored twice for the Anteaters in Saturday’s Big West Conference home match.

Michael Orozco and Seamus McLaughlin each had an assist for UCI (7-5-5, 4-1-1 in conference).

FOOTBALL

Riverside 56, Golden West 13: Former Edison standout David Atencio had four catches for 55 yards and a touchdown for the Rustlers in Saturday’s National Southern League road game.

Zach Lewis passed for 155 yards, one touchdown and one interception for Golden West (3-4, 1-1 in league).

Saddleback 58, Orange Coast 7: Adam Carr had a three-yard touchdown pass to Aaron Fletcher, accounting for the Pirates’ touchdown in Saturday’s National Southern League home game.

Orange Coast is now 1-6 overall, 0-2 in league.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Vanguard 1, Ottawa (Ariz.) 0: Kelsey Bryant scored the lone goal in the sixth minute of Saturday’s Golden State Athletic Conference on the road.

Goalkeeper Haley Magana preserved the shutout with three saves for No. 15 Vanguard, which hosts Menlo College on Thursday at 1 p.m.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Westmont 3, Vanguard 1: Samantha Arrelano and Grace Fonville each had eight kills for the Lions in Saturday’s 25-20, 25-15, 19-25, 26-24 Golden State Athletic Conference road loss.

Vanguard fell to 21-8 overall, 10-6 in conference.

Hawaii 3, UC Irvine 0: Visiting Hawaii swept Saturday’s Big West Conference match, 27-25, 25-17, 25-21.

Abby Marjama and Cassie Stewart each had 10 kills for UC Irvine (4-16, 1-7 in conference).
