High School Roundup: Newport Harbor field hockey tops Huntington Beach to reach Tournament of Champions final

Lindsey Blanchfield scored in sudden-death overtime as the Newport Harbor High field hockey team earned a 1-0 win at Huntington Beach on Thursday in a Tournament of Champions semifinal.

The Sailors (16-7) advance to play Studio City Harvard-Westlake, a 2-1 winner over Edison in the other semifinal, in the title match. The match is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Saturday at West Hills Chaminade High.

Sailors coach Amanda Boyer, whose team previously lost 2-1 to Huntington Beach in a Sunset Conference crossover match, highlighted the defensive play of goalkeeper Cadence Cockrell, as well as Daphne Chong, Hannah Martinez, Zoey Gaddis and Mary Jones in Thursday’s match.

Huntington Beach (21-4-1) will play rival Edison in the Tournament of Champions third-place match Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Chaminade.

Studio City Harvard-Westlake 2, Edison 1: Brooke Johnson scored a second-half goal for the Chargers in Thursday’s Tournament of Champions semifinal match on the road.

The Chargers (14-5) play Huntington Beach in the third-place match Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at West Hills Chaminade.
