College Roundup: Vanguard men’s soccer falls in Golden State Athletic Conference semifinals

Senior forward Jared Gould scored for the Vanguard University men’s soccer team in Wednesday’s 3-1 loss to Menlo College in the Golden State Athletic Conference Tournament semifinals at Westmont College in Santa Barbara.

Gould scored the match’s first goal in the 18th minute before Menlo scored three unanswered, dropping the Lions to 12-7 overall.

Menlo (14-4) advances to Friday’s GSAC championship match against Ottawa University Arizona.

MEN’S WATER POLO

UC Irvine 16, Concordia 5: Jason Evezard scored four goals for the Anteaters, who snapped a 10-match losing streak in Wednesday’s nonconference match at home.

Casey Lynton added three goals and four assists for UC Irvine (7-13).

The No. 14 Anteaters close out Golden Coast Conference play at home against No. 8 Long Beach State on Saturday at 1 p.m.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Orange Coast 3, Riverside 0: Lucrezia Lualdi had a team-high 12 kills to go with 18 digs to lead the host Pirates to a 25-13, 25-17, 26-24 win at home in an Orange Empire Conference match on Wednesday.

Thea Snider handed out 37 assists, and Terri Takita-Robins added 16 digs for second-place Orange Coast (18-5, 11-4 in conference).

Irvine Valley 3, Golden West 0: Alaina Gendale had 14 kills and nine digs to send the host Lasers to a 25-12, 25-17, 25-13 win in an Orange Empire Conference match on Wednesday.

Golden West dropped to 13-7 overall and 7-7 in conference play.

Irvine Valley (21-0, 14-0) has clinched the conference championship with just two matches remaining.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Rio Hondo 70, Golden West 67: John Stillgess had 23 points, six rebounds and four steals for the host Rustlers in nonconference play on Wednesday.

Eric Watson had 15 points, 11 rebounds and four blocked shots for Golden West (0-5). Tyrique Wilson added 10 points and three assists off the bench.
