College Roundup: Vanguard men’s basketball beats Bethesda

Isaiah Gentry finished with 17 points, six rebounds, three blocked shots and two steals, helping the Vanguard University men’s basketball team to a 90-72 victory over Bethesda in Friday’s nonconference home game.

Michael Magee added 12 points, seven rebounds and two steals for the Lions (4-3). Masie Mohammadi and Kieran Hayward had 11 points apiece.

Vanguard hosts College of Idaho on Saturday at 5 p.m.

Southwestern 120, Orange Coast 67: Myles Woods had 16 points and six assists for the Pirates in Friday’s Palomar Thanksgiving Tournament game in San Marcos.

Andres Ortega and Aundrel Pua each had 10 points for Orange Coast (1-5), which has lost four straight games.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Vanguard 94, Columbia College 59: Vanessa Murphy scored 25 points on 10-for-16 shooting for the Lions, ranked No. 10 in the NAIA poll, against the No. 9 Cougars on Friday in the Jackson Rotary Classic in Tennessee.

Victoria Chea had 17 points, 10 assists and two steals for Vanguard (2-1), while Sierra Vaglica contributed 18 points.

The Lions resume play in the tournament with a 2 p.m. game Saturday against No. 13 Talladega College.

Denver 83, UC Irvine 75: Sophia Locandro had 16 points on seven-for-eight shooting in the visiting Anteaters’ game in the Pioneer Thanksgiving Classic on Friday in Denver, Colo.

Lauren Saiki had 15 points and nine assists, and Dani Guglielmo added 12 points on four three-pointers for UC Irvine (3-3).

The Anteaters face North Alabama in the tournament on Saturday at noon.
