High School Roundup: Edison boys’ soccer wins pair in Hawks Invitational

The Edison High boys’ soccer team won its first two matches in the Laguna Hills Hawks Invitational on Thursday.

Riley Holmes and Marcus Henze scored goals for the Chargers in a 2-1 win over Mission Viejo at Laguna Hills High to begin the day.

Edison also defeated Sherman Oaks Notre Dame 1-0, receiving a goal from Armand Pigeon, in a game played at Lake Forest Sports Park. Goalkeepers Bennett Flory and Dylan Delaney combined on the shutout.

The Chargers (7-1) will face Estancia on Friday at 9:30 a.m. The match will be played on Field 1 at Lake Forest Sports Park.

Laguna Hills 3, Huntington Beach 1: Carson Dykes scored for the Oilers (3-4-2) in their opening match of the Hawks Invitational on Thursday morning at Laguna Hills High.

Huntington Beach 2, Santa Margarita 1: Liam Wilder and Dykes each scored a goal for the Oilers on Thursday night at Trabuco Hills High.

Capistrano Valley 2, Fountain Valley 1: Tyler Le had a goal for the Barons (2-5) in their first match of the Hawks Invitational on Thursday morning at Lake Forest Sports Park.

Corona Santiago 2, Fountain Valley 1: Cantor Wright had the Barons’ goal on Thursday night in a match at Lake Forest Sports Park.

Estancia 1, Sherman Oaks Notre Dame 1: Marcos Arreola scored a goal for the Eagles (1-8-3) in their tournament opener of the Hawks Invitational on Thursday morning at Lake Forest Sports Park.

Mission Viejo 3, Estancia 0: The Eagles were held scoreless for the sixth time this season in Thursday night’s match at Lake Forest Sports Park.

Santa Margarita 3, Costa Mesa 0: The Mustangs (2-6-3) were shut out for the third consecutive match on Thursday morning in a Hawks Invitational opener at Lake Forest Sports Park.

Laguna Hills 1, Costa Mesa 0: The Mustangs were held scoreless for the sixth time this season in Thursday afternoon’s match at Laguna Hills High.

Savanna 3, Laguna Beach 1: The Breakers (4-3-1) had their three-match unbeaten streak snapped in Thursday’s opener of the Marina Holiday Classic at Fountain Valley High.

Laguna Beach 3, Compton Dominguez 2: The Breakers bounced back to earn a split of their two matches on Thursday in another contest at Fountain Valley High.

El Segundo Wiseburn Da Vinci 1, Ocean View 0: The Seahawks (2-7-3) were shut out for the first time this season in a Marina Holiday Classic opener at home.

Ocean View 3, Whittier 1: The Seahawks picked up their second win of the season on Thursday afternoon in a pool-play match of the Marina Holiday Classic at Ocean View High.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Huntington Beach 2, Esperanza 1: The Oilers won their opening group match at the Excalibur Tournament of Champions on Thursday.

Huntington Beach (6-2-3) concludes group play with a match against Clovis on Friday at Silverlakes Sports Complex in Norco. With a win, the Oilers would clinch advancement to the quarterfinals later Friday.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Laguna Beach 54, San Diego Patrick Henry 43: Nolan Naess scored 27 points for the Breakers in their Torrey Pines tournament opener Thursday.

Willie Rounaghi added 15 points for Laguna Beach (9-4).

Corona del Mar 57, Kellis (Ariz.) 41: Jack Stone scored 17 points for the Sea Kings in the Cactus Winter Hoops Shootout tournament opener Thursday in Phoenix, Ariz.

Efe Gucoglu added 11 points for CdM (9-3).

Ocean View 70, Cathedral City 51: The Seahawks improved to 9-6 after winning their Rancho Mirage tournament opener Thursday.

Century 58, Newport Harbor 46: The Sailors (11-4) dropped their Century Holiday Classic tournament opener Thursday to the host Centurions.

Laguna Hills 51, Costa Mesa 35: The Mustangs fell to 2-12 after losing their Estancia Coast Classic tournament opener Thursday.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Fountain Valley 52, Auburn Jefferson (Wash.) 49: Kat Luu had 24 points to lead the Barons (8-6) in Thursday’s game of the SoCal Holiday Prep Classic in San Diego.

Margaret Tengan added 16 points, and Zoe Ziegler also had four points and five blocked shots.

Sage Hill 60, El Toro 52: Emily Elliott had 27 points and 14 rebounds for the Lightning (8-4) in Thursday’s game of the SoCal Holiday Prep Classic in San Diego.

Isabel Gomez also had 11 points, eight rebounds and five assists for Sage Hill.

Newport Harbor 42, Pacifica 41 (OT): Fiona Lin sunk the game-winning three-pointer for the Sailors (10-5) on Thursday in a Savanna Tournament game.

Genevieve Perry had 13 points, including a game-tying three-pointer late. Emma Fults added 10 points, nine rebounds and three assists. Chloe Swanson provided seven points and 12 rebounds, and Cydney Jover contributed seven points and four assists for Newport Harbor.

Norwalk John Glenn 29, Marina 26: Greta Graeler had 10 points and 11 rebounds for the host Vikings (2-9) on Thursday night in a pool-play game of the Larry Doyle and Dan Wiley Tournament of Champions.

Kat Robinson had six points and four rebounds, and Malia Kawakubo added five points and five rebounds.

WRESTLING

Kai Villasenor (106 pounds), Giovanni Sabatasso (120), Luis Nateras (145), Jack Larner (145) and JJ Perez (220) advanced through the consolation bracket on Friday in the Black Watch Tournament at Upland High.

Each will try to place in the tournament when wrestling resumes on Saturday.
