High School Roundup: Laguna Beach girls’ water polo reaches CIF Division 1 semifinals with win over Los Al
Morgan Van Alphen and Molly Renner each had four goals, and the top-seeded Laguna Beach High girls’ water polo team beat Los Alamitos 12-7 on Thursday in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs at Capistrano Valley High.
Emma Singer scored twice for defending champion Laguna Beach (28-1), which plays No. 4-seeded Newport Harbor in the semifinals Wednesday at Irvine’s Woollett Aquatics Center.
Edison 9, Vista Murrieta 3: Sam Worley scored four goals for the visiting Chargers in the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division 4 playoffs Thursday.
Ella Jensen added three goals for Edison (17-13), which will host No. 3-seeded Downey in the quarterfinals on Saturday at a time and venue to be determined.
Costa Mesa 11, Norco 9: Kira Anderson scored five goals for the top-seeded Mustangs in the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division 5 playoffs Thursday on the road.
Taiuta Uiagelelei had four goals for Costa Mesa (22-6), which will host Hacienda Heights Los Altos in the quarterfinals Saturday.
Marina 9, Santa Paula 3: Lily Ensley scored four goals for the No. 3-seeded Vikings in the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division 6 playoffs Thursday on the road.
Marina (18-11) will host Pasadena in the quarterfinals Saturday at Westminster High. Match time is to be determined.
GIRLS’ SOCCER
Corona del Mar 3, Mater Dei 2 (OT): Avery Doherty scored the golden goal, her second goal of the match, to lead the Sea Kings to the road win in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs Thursday.
Mia Ferrentino also scored for CdM (13-5-2). Alex Ianni had a pair of assists.
The Sea Kings host Corona Santiago in the second round Saturday at 3 p.m. at Newport Harbor High.
Edison 4, Trabuco Hills 0: Jackie Peterson scored twice for the Chargers in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs at home Thursday.
Morgan Roberts also scored for Edison (12-5-4), which also got an own-goal.
Edison hosts Santa Margarita in the second round Saturday.
Marina 0, Simi Valley Royal 0 (Marina wins 5-4 on PKs): Goalkeeper Carli Miles made a save in the shootout for the host Vikings in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 2 playoffs Thursday, giving the program its first postseason win since 2009.
Haley Boren, Lexi Vanhorn, Alicia Rodriguez, Felica Hyde and Makena Castillo all scored in the shootout for Marina (9-8-3), which plays at Brea Olinda on Saturday.
Laguna Beach 1, Redlands Citrus Valley 0: Baylor Lund scored on a penalty kick for the Breakers in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 3 playoffs Thursday at home.
Laguna Beach (7-5-6) hosts No. 4 Palos Verdes on Saturday at 5 p.m. in the second round.
Costa Mesa 1, Godinez 1 (Costa Mesa wins 4-2 on PKs): Erin Rodriguez scored for the Mustangs in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 4 playoffs Thursday at home.
Aubrey Hallman made a save in the shootout for Costa Mesa (13-6-2), which hosts Hacienda Heights Wilson in the second round Saturday.
Ocean View 2, Victorville Silverado 1: The Seahawks advanced in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 4 playoffs Thursday at home.
Ocean View (13-11-1) plays at No. 2-seeded Chatsworth Sierra Canyon in the second round Saturday.
Estancia 3, Lakewood St. Joseph 2: The Eagles earned a road win Thursday in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 4 playoffs.
Estancia (10-6-3) hosts top-seeded Hemet in the second round Saturday at 5 p.m.
Upland 4, Huntington Beach 0: The Oilers fell at the top seed in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs Thursday.
Huntington Beach finished 10-11-5.
Troy 3, Newport Harbor 1: Sadie Pitchess scored for the visiting Sailors in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs Thursday.
Newport Harbor finished 16-5-4.
Rialto 5, Sage Hill 3: The Lightning (9-9-1) fell on the road Thursday in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 5 playoffs.
GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
Corona del Mar 58, Cerritos 43: Trasara Alexander had a team-high 23 points to lead the visiting Sea Kings on Thursday in a CIF Southern Section Division 3AA first-round playoff game.
Dorothy Schwenck made a trio of three-pointers on her way to scoring 11 points for CdM (22-7). Makena Tomlinson had 10 points.
CdM will be at home against South Torrance (19-10) in the second round on Saturday at 7 p.m.
Sage Hill 61, Chino Don Lugo 55: Isabel Gomez had 28 points, six assists and five rebounds to lead the Lightning on Thursday in a first-round game of the CIF Southern Section Division 3AA playoffs on the road.
Emily Elliott added 18 points and 14 rebounds for Sage Hill (17-9). Zoe Mazakas had eight points and 10 rebounds, while Joyce Jogwe chipped in with five points, four rebounds and four assists.
Sage Hill will host No. 2-seeded Manhattan Beach Mira Costa (20-9) in a second-round matchup on Saturday at 7 p.m.
Long Beach Wilson 62, Marina 19: Ashley Hawkins had 19 points to help send the top-seeded Bruins over the host Vikings on Thursday in a CIF Southern Section Division 3A first-round playoff game.
Greta Graeler had eight points and 13 rebounds for Marina (8-21), which was the second-place team in the Wave League this season.
Calabasas Viewpoint 47, Fountain Valley 32: Kat Luu had 10 points and three blocked shots for the host Barons on Thursday in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 3A playoffs.
Zoe Ziegler added seven rebounds and three blocks for Fountain Valley (16-13), which was the Wave League champion.
Kayla Keshmeshian had a game-high 18 points for the No. 3-seeded Patriots (16-8).
Carpinteria Cate 62, Costa Mesa 29: Lorelei Hobbis had 10 points and nine rebounds for the visiting Mustangs on Thursday in a CIF Southern Section Division 4A first-round playoff game.
Costa Mesa, the third-place team in the Orange Coast League, finished the season with a 7-16 record.
Santa Monica Pacifica Christian 54, Pacifica Christian Orange County 34: Charis Wondercheck had a team-high 14 points for the visiting Tritons on Thursday in a CIF Southern Section Division 5AA first-round playoff game.
Mikaela Sesler added nine points for Pacifica Christian Orange County (10-10), which was the third-place team in the Express League.
