College Roundup: UC Irvine women’s basketball loses to Cal Poly in Big West Tournament quarterfinals

Abbey Ellis had 30 points to lead the No. 8-seeded Cal Poly San Luis Obispo women’s basketball team past No. 3 UC Irvine 70-49 on Wednesday in a Big West Conference Tournament quarterfinal game at Long Beach State’s Walter Pyramid.

Jayde Cadee had a team-high 18 points for the Anteaters (13-18). Haleigh Talbert had nine points, and Lauren Saiki and Sophia Locandro each scored seven points.

The Mustangs (11-18) will play No. 1 UC Davis (17-12) in the semifinals at noon on Friday at Honda Center.

BASEBALL

Orange Coast 10, Irvine Valley 8 (11 innings): Chase Hanson hit a two-run double in the 11th inning to help the Pirates prevail in Wednesday’s Orange Empire Conference game on the road.

David Morgan hit a three-run home run for Orange Coast (12-8, 3-2 in conference). Jake Lopez pitched four shutout innings in relief and earned the win, improving to 3-1.

The Pirates will host Irvine Valley on Saturday at noon.

Golden West 10, Fullerton 9: Jesse Fonteboa walked with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning, scoring Justin Simpson, as the Rustlers earned the walk-off Orange Empire Conference win Wednesday at home.

Enrique Bennett was three for six with a run batted in for Golden West (12-10, 4-1 in conference). Connor Freire (2-2) allowed one run in two innings for the win.

The Rustlers play at Fullerton on Saturday at noon.

SOFTBALL

Cypress 11, Orange Coast 1 (five innings): Joanna Michaels, Jaelyn Operana, Ally Cisneros, Ashley Boss and Caitlyn Sideris had one hit each for the host Pirates in Wednesday’s Orange Empire Conference game.

Orange Coast fell to 2-9 overall and 0-6 in conference play.

Saddleback 2, Golden West 0: Madalyn Burton pitched all seven innings for the Rustlers in Wednesday’s nonconference home game.

Golden West is now 8-12.

BEACH VOLLEYBALL

Vanguard 3, Westcliff 2: The Lions improved to 6-6 overall following Wednesday’s nonconference match in Huntington Beach.

Vanguard’s Kayla Tinker and Shay Larson-Piper defeated Kaitilin Meyer and Rylee Adair 21-15, 21-15.

The doubles pairing of Karly Cantu and Gabby Morrison also beat Sierra Lima and Brooke Scheidle 21-10, 18-21, 15-7, and Sydney Irwin and Emillee Hall earned a win over Sydney Hill and Leah Price 21-10, 22-20 to round out the matches won by the Lions.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Golden West 3, Santiago Canyon 1: The Rustlers opened Orange Empire Conference play with Wednesday’s 21-25, 25-23, 25-14, 25-17 home win.

Golden West improved to 7-5.
