Marina football head coach Jeff Turley didn’t get to see his Vikings finish off their 34-0 win over Ocean View Wednesday at Ocean View High School. By the time the clock ran out in the fourth quarter, Turley was on his way to his son’s graduation from medical school.

Perhaps inspired by Turley’s son, Marina was surgical in its dismantling of Ocean View, stifling a Seahawks offense that had produced 32 points and over 450 rushing yards in their opening-week win against Estancia.

Marina allowed the Seahawks to enter the red zone just twice all night.

Senior cornerback Hung Trinh felt the Vikings defense had something to prove following their 42-6 loss to rival Huntington Beach the week prior.

“We were really mad that we got blown out,” Trinh said. “We’re not used to that against HB, so to play another local school, we wanted to go out hard.”

On offense, Brantt Riederich had a massive night, rushing for 163 yards and two touchdowns. Senior quarterback Jack Miller added a 20-yard touchdown pass to Wyatt McClour, and Gavin Del Toro contributed a 59-yard touchdown run of his own.

Marina jumped out to an early lead they never relinquished.

Late in the first quarter, senior defensive tackle Kash Soto sacked Ocean View quarterback Hunter Arce for a 15-yard loss, forcing them to punt. On the first play following Ocean View’s punt, Riederich collected a lateral pitch from Miller, broke multiple tackles and traced the sideline 89 yards to the end zone. That staked Marina to a 6-0 lead.

“I didn’t see a whole lot,” said Riederich. “I got spun around and it was a little quick, I was shocked to get free on that one.”

The Vikings continued their success in the second quarter when Miller launched a deep pass to the back of the end zone that found McClour for a 20-yard touchdown pass. That extended the Marina lead to 13-0 following a Luke Lastra extra point.

Riederich broke off another long touchdown run in the third quarter, this time for 57 yards and a 20-0 Marina lead.

After Ayden Lastra added a 9-yard touchdown run extending the lead to 27-0 after the extra point, Del Toro finished things off on a quarterback keeper that he took 59 yards to the end zone, bringing the final tally to 34-0 Marina.

Linebacker coach Michael McMahon, who took over head coaching duties after Turley departed in the third quarter, was happy to see his team bounce back.

“It feels really good because we’ve been waiting to play,” McMahon said. “We’re still a little off because COVID kept us down a little bit. I think we just played a really good game, but we still have to pick it up. If you do what you’re supposed to do, you’re going to win.”

For Ocean View, it was a struggle to generate any offense. They relied heavily on junior running back Anthony Ramirez, who led the Seahawks with 86 yards on 18 rushing attempts. Ramirez’s shining moment came when he broke through the stout Marina defense for a 49-yard run.

That run set the Seahawks up with a first down from the 9-yard line, but a false start penalty pushed them back to the 14. Marina eventually forced Ocean View to turn the ball over on downs.

Ocean View offensive line and linebacker coach Peter Kim, who filled in as head coach for a second week in a row after head coach Luis Nunez’s positive COVID-19 test, credited Marina.

“They were just better than us tonight in all aspects of the game,” Kim said. “They gave us an old school butt kicking. We wanted to run the ball with Ramirez, but they took him away. I tip my hat to Marina.”
