High School Roundup: Sage Hill girls’ basketball blows out Bell Gardens
Emily Eadie had 23 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Sage Hill School girls’ basketball team in its 57-16 win over Bell Gardens on Thursday night in a nonleague game at home.
Kat Righeimer had 14 points, seven rebounds, four steals and three assists for the Lightning (6-1). Isabel Gomez contributed six points, five assists, four steals and four rebounds and Emily Elliott added six points, 13 rebounds and three steals.
Zoie Lamkin chipped in with eight points and six rebounds.
Sage Hill previously was eliminated by Bell Gardens in the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division 4AA playoffs in 2018.
Newport Harbor 73, Costa Mesa 15: Cydney Jover’s 15 points and three steals led a balanced effort in Thursday’s win for the host Sailors in a nonleague game.
Chase Dionio had 12 points and four steals, and Vanessa Cornejo scored 10 points for Newport Harbor (4-0).
Reese Rasmussen, Willa Rath and Emma Fults each scored eight points, while Ellie Robinson contributed seven points, two blocked shots and two steals.
SOFTBALL
Huntington Beach 9, San Clemente 2: Emma McCraw and Sophia Knight each had three hits to lead the visiting Oilers on Thursday in a nonleague game.
Mikaela Carman homered for Huntington Beach (9-0) in the contest.
In the pitching circle, Emma Francisco struck out five over her four innings of work. Zoe Prystajko also recorded five strikeouts in two innings, and Devyn Greer struck out the side in her one inning.
BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL
Newport Harbor 3, Huntington Beach 0: Brendan Read had 14 kills and three service aces to lead the host Sailors to a 25-17, 25-19, 25-13 sweep on Thursday in a Surf League opener.
James Eadie had eight kills and two blocks, Rees Classen had eight kills, and Luca Curci delivered four aces and three digs for Newport Harbor (5-1).
Huntington Beach is now 5-1 overall.
Corona del Mar 3, Laguna Beach 0: The visiting Sea Kings opened Surf League play with a 25-14, 25-15, 25-20 straight-sets win over the Breakers on Thursday.
CdM improved to 2-1 overall, while Laguna Beach is now 1-4 on the season.
GIRLS’ SOCCER
Newport Harbor 2, Fountain Valley 0: Anto Russo and Brielle Benedict each scored for the Sailors in Thursday’s Wave League match at Fountain Valley.
Kenna Robar and Laine Briggs each had assists for Newport Harbor (8-1-1, 3-0 in league). Goalkeeper Jessica Gardner made one save to help the Sailors earn their fifth straight shutout.
Fountain Valley is now 1-6-3 overall, 0-3 in league.
Laguna Beach 1, Marina 0: Baylor Lund scored a penalty-kick goal for the Breakers in Thursday’s Wave League match at Laguna Beach High.
The Breakers improved to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in league. Marina is now 5-3-2 overall, 1-2 in league.
BOYS’ TENNIS
Ocean View 11, Westminster 7: The Seahawks stayed unbeaten in the Golden West League after Thursday’s match at Westminster High.
The doubles teams of Andrew Oldag and Lucas Salama, Michael Dechene and Josh Kim, as well as Nick Chumacero and Daniel Vasilevko, all swept for Ocean View (7-3, 5-0 in league). Parker Walpole won twice in singles.
Ocean View hosts Katella on Thursday.
GIRLS’ TENNIS
Edison 10, Laguna Beach 8: The Chargers improved to 2-0 in Wave League play after winning Thursday’s match at Laguna Beach High.
Edison is 5-6 overall.
Sisters Sarah MacCallum and Jessica MacCallum swept in singles for Laguna Beach (6-4, 1-1).
