High School Roundup: Costa Mesa boys’ basketball routs rival Estancia

Senior forward Blake Wolf had 22 points and 12 rebounds as the Costa Mesa High School boys’ basketball team beat rival Estancia 93-60 in the first Battle for the Bell game Thursday night at Costa Mesa High.

Gio Quero added 22 points for Costa Mesa (5-6, 2-0 in Orange Coast League). Christian Dasca had 15 points and seven assists.

Estancia, the defending league champion, fell to 3-4 overall and 0-2 in league.

SOFTBALL

Huntington Beach 5, Los Alamitos 4: Jaylene Duarte had three runs batted in to lead the visiting Oilers on Thursday in a Surf League game.

Devyn Greer and Mikayla Carman each had two hits, and Anna Carreon also drove in two runs for the Oilers (11-1, 2-0 in league). Greer also struck out 12 in going the distance in the pitching circle.

Los Alamitos, the top-ranked team in CIF Southern Section Division 1, is now 12-2 overall and 1-1 in league.

Marina 4, Edison 3: Anaya Togia, Analiah Lummus and Zoe King each had two hits for the host Vikings on Thursday in a Surf League game.

Bella Watts and Haylee Orozco each had a double for Marina (10-2, 1-1).

Emma Mendoza had two hits, including a home run, and two runs batted in for Edison (3-7, 0-2). Izabella Espinoza also had a double, a run scored and an RBI for the Chargers.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Fountain Valley 51, Newport Harbor 49: The Barons outscored the host Sailors by six points in the fourth quarter for a come-from-behind victory on Thursday night in a nonleague game.

Emma Fults had 12 points and 17 rebounds for Newport Harbor (5-2), while Chase Dionio poured in a team-high 13 points to go with five steals. Willa Rath added six points and three blocked shots, and Daelyn Renee chipped in with four points and five steals.

Fountain Valley improved to 6-1 overall.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Corona del Mar 3, Fountain Valley 2: Brea Sofferman, Logan Stern and Isabella Vigeland scored for the Sea Kings in Thursday’s Sunset Conference crossover match at CdM.

Morgan Corcoran and Emily Chanawatr had assists for CdM (6-5-2). Goalkeeper Sydney Walls made seven saves, including one on a penalty kick in the first half, and coach Bryan Middleton credited Alexa Conti, Isabella Almaraz, Corcoran, Jane Paulsen and Anna Neiger for their standout defense.

Fountain Valley is now 1-7-4.

Newport Harbor 0, Los Alamitos 0: Sailors goalkeeper Jessica Gardner had two saves in Thursday’s Sunset Conference crossover match at Newport Harbor High.

Newport Harbor coach Justin Schroeder said his back line of Alyssa Sims, Samara Golan, Jenna McConnaughey and Stella Gaffney played well to help the Sailors preserve the shutout. The Sailors are now 8-1-3 overall.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Newport Harbor 3, Laguna Beach 0: Brendan Read had nine kills and three service aces to lead the Sailors to a sweep of the Breakers 25-20, 25-12, 25-18 on Thursday in a Surf League match on the road.

James Eadie added six kills, and Kyle McKibbin also had five kills for Newport Harbor.

Newport Harbor is now 6-3 overall and 2-1 through the first half of Surf League play, while Laguna Beach dropped to 1-6 overall and 0-3 in league.

Estancia 3, Santa Ana 0: The Eagles swept the Saints 25-17, 25-18, 25-20 on Thursday in an Orange Coast League match at home.

Estancia (2-2, 2-1) plays host to Orange next Wednesday.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Ocean View 15, Katella 3: The Seahawks improved to 6-0 in the Golden West League after Thursday’s home match.

Ocean View’s freshman doubles team of Josh Stead and Jacob Lima earned its first varsity win in a tiebreaker, while Kyle Daniels and Jackson Englar-Carlson also contributed a victory.

Ocean View plays at Segerstrom on Thursday.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Corona del Mar 13, Los Alamitos 5: Reece Kenerson and Jane Paulsen swept at No. 1 doubles for the Sea Kings in Thursday’s Surf League match on the road.

Cate Montgomery and Tori Varela also swept in doubles for CdM (11-1, 3-1 in league). Sophia Andrei-Birca swept in singles.

The Sea Kings host first-place Huntington Beach (12-0, 4-0) on Tuesday, and need a victory to claim a share of the league title.

BOYS’ GOLF

Edison 189, Servite 198: Ben Crinella was the medalist for the victorious Chargers, shooting an even-par 35 on Thursday in a nonleague match at Western Hills Country Club.

Edison improved to 12-3 overall this season.
