High School Roundup: Marina boys’ tennis advances to CIF semifinals

Peter Liang swept in singles as the Marina High School boys’ tennis team beat Diamond Bar 11-7 on Monday at home in the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section Division 3 playoffs.

Bradley Gallo also swept in singles for No. 2-seeded Marina (12-5), and Vincent Hoang won two of three sets.

Jonathan Gertz and Nathan Nguyen won twice in doubles for the Vikings, who play at JSerra in the semifinals on Wednesday.

Riverside J.W. North 9, Ocean View 9 (J.W. North wins 67-65 on games): The Seahawks nearly upset the top-seeded team in the CIF Southern Section Division 5 playoffs in Monday’s quarterfinal match on the road.

Ocean View, the Golden West League champion, ended its season with a 12-4 record.

Menifee Heritage 11, Costa Mesa 7: The Mustangs ended their season 11-3 after Monday’s loss in the CIF Southern Section Division 5 quarterfinals.

BASEBALL

Ocean View 5, Arlington 4: Jimmy Legg’s walk-off hit lifted the Seahawks in Monday’s nonleague game at Ocean View High.

Thomas Williams went three for four with a run batted in for Ocean View (19-6), while Kai Marden, Mulivai Levu and Dylan Simonds each had two hits. Rizzy Collado pitched one shutout inning in relief to earn the victory.

Loara 6, Los Amigos 0: The Lobos had their two-game winning streak snapped on Monday in a Garden Grove League game on the road.

Los Amigos (4-5 overall and in league), which is tied with Bolsa Grande for third place in the league, finishes the regular season with a home game against Loara (12-3, 8-1) on Thursday. The Saxons can clinch the outright league title with a win.

Bolsa Grande (6-8, 4-5) will be at home versus Rancho Alamitos (6-10, 3-6) that same day.

BOYS’ GOLF

Surf League four-way match

Huntington Beach won the match, shooting a team score of 189 on Monday at Newport Beach Country Club.

Corona del Mar shot 190, and Newport Harbor shot 194. Edison carded a team score of 202.

Huntington Beach’s Shawn Williams and Edison’s Timothy Jung tied for medalist honors among the four teams, shooting one-under-par 34. Nick Thayer led Newport Harbor with a 35, and Heman Liang and Peter Hu each shot a 37 for CdM.

GIRLS’ GOLF

Orange Coast League finals: Estancia’s Lexi Thorpe shot a four-over-par 39 on the Mesa Linda course at Costa Mesa Country Club to lead the field after day one of the Orange Coast League finals at Costa Mesa Country Club.

A total of 28 golfers played nine holes on Monday, with the top 12 advancing in the two-day event. The remaining golfers will play a full 18-hole round on Tuesday. Their scores from both days will be combined into a 27-hole total, and the top four will advance into the CIF Southern Section postseason.

After Monday, Costa Mesa’s Sydney Ngo (40) was second, while Estancia’s Lexi Jaeger (44) and Danielle Breitweiser (49) were fourth and ninth, respectively.
