Seven local boys’ soccer teams qualified for the CIF Southern Section playoffs this past season, and while postseason success was tough to come by, one of those teams had a playoff run to remember.

Huntington Beach advanced to the Division 2 quarterfinals, and in recognition of that accomplishment, the Oilers had two players named to the All-CIF roster in Division 2 in Reid Fisher and Josh Lucas. They were the only two players from the area to earn such honors across all divisions in the section.

Fisher, a holding center midfielder, had four goals and nine assists for the Oilers. During the playoffs, he had a two-goal performance in a 5-1 first-round win over Estancia. Fisher also scored the game-winning goal in a 1-0 overtime victory at Tustin in the second round.

Lucas, an offensive-minded midfielder, tallied 11 goals and two assists.

“Both Reid and Josh are driven to be the best, and they have that desire to win,” Oilers coach Sean Dick said. “Reid led by example and that is why he was made captain this year. Josh has the gift to make everyone around him better and he did that for the team.

“This team believed from the start that they had the ability to have a great season so long as they played for each other, and that is exactly what they did.”

Huntington Beach (13-3-2) showed consistency throughout the season. The Oilers started off unranked, ascending to as high as No. 2 in the Division 2 poll before ending the year ranked sixth.

A prolonged unbeaten streak saw Huntington Beach go 10-0-2 over its first 12 matches. The Oilers’ two regular-season losses came during Wave League play, allowing Newport Harbor (10-5-2) to win the league title outright.

The run to the quarterfinals turned out to be a sort of redemption, as the Oilers rebounded from those hiccups during league. Huntington Beach lost to Newhall Hart 2-1 in its quarterfinal match.
