High School Roundup: Huntington Beach bests Fountain Valley in Sunset League opener
AJ Perez had two passing touchdowns and ran in another score, as the Huntington Beach High School football team defeated Fountain Valley 42-7 on Friday in a Sunset League opener at home.
Evan Riederich had a rushing score and a receiving touchdown. Perez’s other touchdown toss went to Hideo Ray, while backup quarterback Vaughn Popp connected with Hunter Gray on a 41-yard scoring strike late.
Nathan Tauanuu also scored on the ground for Huntington Beach (4-2, 1-0 in league), which faces Corona del Mar (5-1, 0-1) at Davidson Field next week.
The Oilers scored 20 points in the fourth quarter to put the game away.
Fountain Valley (1-5, 0-1), which will play host to Newport Harbor (1-5, 0-1) next, had a rushing touchdown from Abdel Habibeh.
Laguna Beach 27, Segerstrom 14: Luke Degner had 10 catches for 153 yards and three touchdowns to send the visiting Breakers past the Jaguars in a nonleague game on Friday.
Will Bingham threw for 346 yards and four touchdowns, the other TD going to Jacob Diver.
Jack Arntz had an interception, and James Golden recovered a fumble for the Breakers defensively.
Laguna Beach (6-1), which has won five in a row, will travel to take on Westminster (5-1) in a Pac 4 League opener on Oct. 15.
Marina 42, Los Angeles Salesian 30: The Vikings were victorious on Friday in their homecoming game at Boswell Field.
Marina (2-5), which snapped a two-game losing streak with the win, has a bye next week. The Vikings, the defending Big 4 League champions, will begin league play at Segerstrom (1-5) on Oct. 15.
Orange 57, Costa Mesa 6: The Panthers blew out the host Mustangs in an Orange Coast League opener on Friday night.
Costa Mesa (2-4, 0-1) lines up against Calvary Chapel (4-2, 0-1) at home next week.
