High School Roundup: Pacifica Christian Orange County girls’ volleyball advances in state playoffs

Freshman opposite Chara Wondercheck had a team-high 10 kills to lead host Pacifica Christian to a 25-8, 20-25, 25-16, 25-17 win over Avalon on Tuesday in the first round of the CIF State Southern California Division V regional playoffs.

Junior outside hitter Ava Loritz and freshman middle blocker Kaelin Rieke each had seven kills for Pacifica Christian (20-10), which plays at El Segundo Wiseburn Da Vinci (26-6) on Thursday. Wiseburn Da Vinci defeated the Tritons in the semifinals of the CIF Southern Section Division 8 playoffs.

Junior middle blocker Rebecca Penjoyan added five kills and five service aces for the Tritons. Senior setter Logan Bray contributed 26 assists and four aces, and freshman outside hitter Julia Hanson chipped in with six kills.

San Diego Torrey Pines 3, Huntington Beach 2: Haylee LaFontaine had 24 kills and seven aces, but the Oilers fell on the road 25-22, 12-25, 19-25, 25-22, 17-15 on Tuesday in the first round of the Division I state tournament.

Huntington Beach (28-7), the Surf League champion, was the runner-up in the CIF Southern Section Division 2 playoffs, falling to top-seeded Aliso Niguel in four sets at home.

Torrey Pines (23-10) plays at No. 3-seeded Studio City Harvard-Westlake (26-8) in the regional quarterfinals on Thursday.
