The Newport Harbor High School girls’ basketball team began its title defense with a 60-19 win over Rancho Alamitos on Monday in a nonleague season opener on the road.

Chase Dionio had 23 points to pace the Sailors, who are coming off winning the CIF Southern Section Division 4A championship last season. The section title was the first in program history.

Cydney Jover added 14 points, six assists and two steals, and Aissa Grum added 10 points for Newport Harbor, which has now been promoted to the Division 2A playoff grouping.

Estancia 39, Los Amigos 20: The Eagles came away victorious in a battle of local programs to begin the season on Monday in the Los Amigos Tournament.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Compton Dominguez 70, Ocean View 64 (2 OT): Chico Lopez had 40 points for Ocean View in the opening round of the Jim Harris Memorial Tournament on Monday night at Ocean View High.

Frankie Chambers scored 31 points to lead Dominguez.

The Seahawks (0-1) continued tournament play against Long Beach Rancho Dominguez on Tuesday.
