High School Roundup: Fountain Valley wrestling places fourth at Mann Classic

Sophomore Ryland Whitworth won the 195-pound title of the Mann Classic wrestling tournament on Saturday at Marina High School, leading a group of seven placers for Fountain Valley, which finished fourth at the tournament.

Whitworth went 4-0 over the two-day event with two pins. He defeated Clovis Buchanan’s Keanu Trelles by an 8-2 decision in the final.

Fountain Valley’s Zach Parker was also a finalist, dropping the 145-pound title bout to Calvary Chapel’s Koa Ruiz by a 5-3 decision.

Buchanan comfortably secured the team title in earning 336.5 points, doing so on the backs of 11 places. Corona Centennial was second with 199.5 points.

Servite edged out Fountain Valley 183.5-183 for third place and the best showing among Orange County programs, followed closely by Calvary Chapel in fifth with 181.5 points.

Corona del Mar placed 11th with 105 points. Eugenio Franco led the Sea Kings with a fourth-place finish at 195 pounds.

Marina wound up at 16th overall with 74 points. Haden Hernandez was the top performer for the Vikings, taking third place in the 126-pound bracket.

Rounding out the local contingent was Costa Mesa, which had one wrestler place in Nathan Ramirez, who was eighth among the 138-pounders at the meet.

Lady Monarch Classic

Newport Harbor’s Skyler Gassel was the runner-up at 131 pounds on Saturday in the Mater Dei Lady Monarch Classic. She went 3-1 at the tournament with three pins.

Carol Mendoza placed sixth for the Sailors, going 2-2 at the tournament with two victories by fall.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Sage Hill 56, San Clemente 46: Isabel Gomez had a career-high 36 points to go with seven rebounds, four steals, three blocked shots and three assists for the host Lightning on Saturday in a nonleague game.

Kat Righeimer added 12 points, 11 rebounds, four assists and two steals for Sage Hill (10-2).

Newport Harbor 63, El Cajon Valley 40: Chase Dionio scored a team-high 29 points to go with five steals and four assists for the Sailors on Saturday in a nonleague game at home.

Cydney Jover added 17 points, eight assists and three steals for Newport Harbor (10-2).

Kate Bland had eight points and six rebounds, and Emma Fults contributed five points, 10 rebounds, four assists, four steals and two blocks.

Laguna Beach 54, Industry Workman 36: Kate Cheng had a team-high 19 points to go with eight rebounds and two steals for the Breakers in Saturday’s nonleague home game.

Sophie Marriner scored 11 points with five steals for Laguna Beach (10-2), and Alexandra Grombchevsky had 10 points and four steals.

Laguna Beach 46, Katella 12: Anna Cheng led the Breakers with 11 points and four steals on Friday in a nonleague game at Laguna Beach High School.

Alexander Grombchevsky added 10 points for Laguna Beach. Sophie Marriner scored six points and pulled down 18 rebounds.

Huntington Beach 54, Kennedy 45: Isobel Melitas scored a team-high 19 points, including five three-pointers, on Friday in a nonleague game at home.

Makenna Tayenaka had 10 points, Lily Alonso added eight points, and Akemi Tanga chipped in with seven points for Huntington Beach (4-6).

BOYS’ SOCCER

Godinez 1, Huntington Beach 0 (OT): The host Oilers suffered their first loss of the season on Saturday evening in the final of the All-Turf Tournament.

Huntington Beach (5-1-1) had earned wins over Bellflower St. John Bosco, Santa Ana and La Habra to reach the championship match.

Huntington Beach 5, La Habra 1: Reid Fisher, Nico Ruiz, Dillon Kosai, Kalani Delarole and Carson Dykes each scored a goal for the Oilers in Saturday morning’s pool play match in the All-Turf Tournament.

Fountain Valley 1, Trabuco Hills 1: Masin Marini scored the equalizer in the second half to secure a tie for the Barons on Friday in a nonleague match at home.

Fountain Valley is now 1-1-1 overall.

Villa Park 6, Corona del Mar 1: Ari Kanazawa scored an unassisted goal for the host Sea Kings, who suffered their first loss of the season on Friday in a nonleague match.

Corona del Mar dropped to 3-1 on the season.

Laguna Beach 4, Ocean View 2: Edwin Orzuna and Kevin Guzman scored goals for the visiting Seahawks on Friday in a nonleague match.

Laguna Beach improved to 4-3 overall, while Ocean View’s record is now 0-6.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Newport Harbor 1, Eastvale Roosevelt 0: Sadie Hoch provided the lone scoring strike in the Sailors’ victory in a Best of the West Tournament contest.

Brielle Benedict recorded the assist for Newport Harbor (2-3-2). Emily Park made five saves for the shutout.

Newport Harbor 1, JSerra 1: Anto Russo scored on a goal assisted by Auna Baum, as the Sailors played to a draw with the Lions on Saturday in the Best of the West Tournament.

GIRLS’ WATER POLO

Laguna Beach 8, Orange Lutheran 7: Ava Houlahan scored seven goals to lead the Breakers on Saturday in a nonleague game.

Charlotte Riches also scored a goal for Laguna Beach (5-0), and goalkeeper Lauren Schneider stopped 11 shots.
