High School Roundup: Local girls’ soccer teams compete in Best in the West Tournament

The Newport Harbor girls’ soccer team reached the semifinals of the “ABCD” flight in the Best in the West Tournament, where it lost to eventual champion Temecula Valley 1-0 on Saturday at Davidson Field.

Emily Park made six saves for the Sailors (2-5-3), who earned a draw against JSerra and beat Eastvale Roosevelt earlier in the tournament.

Temecula Valley beat Los Alamitos 2-1 in the championship match at University High School, claiming supremacy in the top division.

Newport Harbor (2-5-3) dropped the third-place match to San Juan Hills 2-1. Sadie Hoch scored a goal assisted by Anto Russo, and Park contributed three saves.

Aliso Niguel 1, Edison 0: The Chargers were shut out by the Wolverines in the final of the “EFGH” flight of the Best in the West Tournament on Saturday at Downey Warren High School.

Edison (5-3-1) earned a 3-1 win over Long Beach Poly to reach the championship match.

Sage Hill 2, Tustin 0: The Lightning improved to 5-1-1 overall following Friday’s nonleague win at home.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Anaheim 2, Edison 1: Grayson Marquez scored for the Chargers on Friday in a nonleague match on the road.

Edison dropped to 1-3-2 overall following the loss to the Colonists, who are ranked ninth in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 poll.

Fountain Valley 3, Segerstrom 0: Jack Todd, Marcus Edsel and Daniel Oakes scored goals for the host Barons on Friday in a nonleague contest.

Austin Quach kept the clean sheet in the net for Fountain Valley (2-2-1).

Westminster 3, Laguna Beach 0: The Breakers were blanked at home in a nonleague match on Friday.

Laguna Beach had its overall record evened at 4-4.

Kennedy 1, Marina 0: The Vikings fell to 1-4-1 overall with Friday’s defeat in a nonleague match at home.

Newport Harbor 2, Santa Margarita 1: The visiting Sailors ran their record to 4-2-1 with a nonleague road victory on Friday.

Saddleback 8, Ocean View 1: Edgar Zavala scored for the visiting Seahawks, who fell to 0-7-1 overall on Friday in a nonleague match.

Fairmont Prep 7, Pacifica Christian Orange County 0: The host Tritons were kept off the scoresheet on Friday in an Academy League match.

Pacifica Christian is 0-4 overall and 0-2 in league.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Garden Grove 66, Los Amigos 34: The Lobos dropped to 2-7 overall after Friday’s nonleague game on the road.

Ocean View 64, Santiago 57: The Seahawks picked up a win in the Loara Tournament on Saturday, improving to 8-5 on the season.

Chico Lopez scored a team-high 30 points for Ocean View, and Peyton Guerrero added 20 points.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Laguna Beach 44, Santa Clarita Golden Valley 32: The visiting Breakers extended their winning streak to eight games with Friday’s nonleague win.

Marina 37, Rancho Alamitos 31: Emily Quach and Tami Trinh had nine points apiece for the Vaqueros, but the Vikings earned the nonleague win on the road.

Marina improved to 5-7 overall.

San Pedro Rolling Hills Prep 55, Sage Hill 53: The Lightning, the top-ranked team in the CIF Southern Section Division 2AA poll, were upset on Friday by the visiting Huskies, who entered the week at No. 14 in the division.

WRESTLING

Zinkin Classic: Fountain Valley placed sixth as a team with 100 points in the Zinkin Classic at Clovis Buchanan High School on Saturday.

Buchanan topped all schools at the tournament with 361 points, followed by Clovis with 226.5 points.

Ryland Whitworth was the top performer for the Barons, finishing as the runner-up at 195 pounds to Buchanan’s Keanu Trelles.

Additional placers for Fountain Valley were Zach Parker (third, 145), Khale McDonnell (fifth, 170) and Sean Solis (sixth, 132).

Ed Spring Holiday Classic: Newport Harbor placed 12th as a team with 79 points in the Ed Spring Holiday Classic at Brea Olinda High School on Saturday.

Demian Pryima was a finalist in the 106-pound weight class for the Sailors. Newport Harbor also had Kai Villasenor (fifth, 113), Giovanni Sabatasso (seventh, 132) and Anthony Manno (eighth, 138) place in the tournament.

Estancia received third-place showings from Trevor Wagstaff (138) and Zach Maxwell (145).
