When the Estancia High School girls’ basketball team ran into Ocean View in a season-opening tournament at Los Amigos, the Eagles suffered a two-point defeat as part of a three-game skid.

The tables have turned dramatically since then for Estancia, which is riding high as winners of six of its past seven games.

Estancia reversed its fortunes against Ocean View, as the Eagles defeated the host Seahawks 48-41 on Tuesday night in the Hawk Holiday Classic.

Estancia thrived off its energy, creating turnovers in abundance and securing 23 steals in the contest.

“That’s the type of team we are,” Estancia coach Judd Fryslie said of his team’s propensity for getting takeaways. “We don’t really shoot very well from the outside, but we do take them, so we have to get our share of layups.”

The score was tied at 10-10 at the end of the first quarter. Sanchez beat the shot clock from just inside the three-point line to start the second quarter, and the Eagles led the rest of the way.

“We just work on playing,” Meza said. “We just try to get rebounds, get layups in and also get open.”

Lizbeth Sanchez scored eight points to go with five steals and four rebounds. Elisa Hernandez had eight points, four rebounds and three steals, and Sofia Sihabouj contributed four points, three rebounds and two steals.

Hernandez helped Estancia extend its lead in the second half, at one point converting six free throws in a row. A physical player in the paint, Hernandez said practice makes perfect at the charity stripe.

“I don’t really think about shooting,” Hernandez said. “I just shoot, and I guess I make it. I do practice a lot. It just goes my way.”

Orange Coast League play begins next week, with the Eagles opening with a home game against Orange next Tuesday, followed by the first meeting in the Battle for the Bell at Costa Mesa that Thursday.

“They want to make the playoffs,” Fryslie said of his team’s goals. “They know Calvary [Chapel] is good, but they know that they got a chance with everybody else in league and got to finish in the top three.”

Ocean View (10-4) opened its host tournament with wins over Loara and Westminster La Quinta on Monday. The Seahawks entered Tuesday’s contest as winners of three straight and eight of their past nine games.

Lily Campbell kept the Seahawks, who trailed 19-16 at halftime, in the game with 20 points and 14 rebounds.

“Any time we need something, a bucket or something, she’s always there,” Dannieka Butler said. “She’s getting those tough rebounds. … That’s just hard work. Those are putbacks, her getting those rebounds, being tough inside, and that’s something that she’s been working on the whole season is being a little more aggressive.

“When we need her, she’s there, and she’s definitely someone we always count on, and she always provides. Tonight was just her night to shine, and the whole team couldn’t back it up and give her that [win].”

Marisabel Alcaraz had five points, five rebounds and three assists for Ocean View. Vanessa Tapia distributed five assists and grabbed five rebounds, Nayleen Gonzalez had six points, and Anh Nguyen and Jaden Campuzano scored four points each.
