High School Roundup: Newport Harbor girls’ water polo snaps Laguna Beach’s 42-match winning streak

Senior foreign exchange student Bia Mantellato scored four goals as the Newport Harbor High girls’ water polo team beat Laguna Beach 7-5 on Tuesday night at Los Alamitos High in a Surf League match.

Taylor Smith, Morgan Netherton and Avery Montiel each added one goal for the Sailors (8-1, 2-0 in league), ranked No. 2 in CIF Southern Section Division 1. Goalkeeper Anna Reed made six saves.

Newport Harbor handed top-ranked Laguna Beach (12-1, 0-1) its first loss since a nonleague setback at Foothill in January 2020, breaking the Breakers’ 42-match winning streak.

It was also Laguna Beach’s first league loss since 2006 when Corona del Mar snapped its 66-match winning streak in the Pacific Coast League.

Laguna Beach had rallied for a 10-9 overtime win over Newport Harbor in the Bill Barnett Holiday Cup final last week. This time, Newport Harbor opened a 5-1 halftime lead and was able to hold on for the victory.

The Breakers got two goals each from Ava Houlahan and Ava Knepper in Tuesday’s match, with Presley Jones also scoring. Goalkeeper Lauren Schneider made 12 saves.

The teams are the top two seeds for this weekend’s Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions.

Los Alamitos 12, Corona del Mar 5: The Sea Kings fell to 0-2 in the Surf League after Tuesday night’s match at Los Alamitos High.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Capistrano Valley Christian 75, Pacifica Christian Orange County 69: Tanner Deal had 18 points and seven rebounds for the Tritons in Tuesday’s San Joaquin League opener at Pacifica Christian.

Alex Stewart scored 16 points and pulled down six rebounds for Pacifica Christian (8-9), ranked No. 12 in CIF Southern Section Division 2A. Parker Strauss had 14 points, eight rebounds and seven assists.

Capo Valley Christian is the No. 2-ranked team in Division 2AA.

Pacifica Christian returns to action with a home game against Fairmont Prep on Thursday.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Corona del Mar 52, Edison 19: Haley Esquino had a game-high 17 points for the Sea Kings Tuesday in a Sunset Conference crossover game at home.

Makena Tomlinson added 12 points for CdM (7-8). Alexa Rokos, Myla Zapanta and Megan Martodam each scored six points.

Mia Cassel led Edison (7-13) with seven points.

Orange 51, Estancia 48: Mackenzie Sanchez had 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Eagles in Tuesday’s Orange Coast League opener at home.

Alexis Orellana had 10 points and six steals for Estancia (8-6), while Sofia Sihabouj contributed nine points and nine rebounds.

Fountain Valley 66, Laguna Beach 35: Audrey Tengan paced the host Barons with 16 points on Tuesday in a Sunset Conference crossover game.

Margaret Tengan had 13 points, Audrey Chow added 10 points, Sarah Henry scored nine points and Sariah Loftis chipped in with six points for Fountain Valley (11-4).

Laguna Beach is now 14-4 overall.

Newport Harbor 56, Los Alamitos 44: Chase Dionio had 25 points to lead the Sailors on Tuesday in a Sunset Conference crossover game on the road.

Emma Fults had seven points and 14 rebounds for Newport Harbor (13-5). Kate Bland added seven points and seven rebounds, Aissa Grum had six points and four rebounds, and Emma Coatsworth scored four points to go with seven rebounds.

Segerstrom 58, Ocean View 26: Faith Ledesma had 20 points, seven rebounds, five assists and five steals to send the host Jaguars past the Seahawks Tuesday in a Golden West League opener.

Brianna Urena added 11 points, seven steals and five assists for Segerstrom (6-12).

Ocean View dropped to 11-6 overall.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Edison 2, Laguna Beach 1: Grace Ingalls and Alex Wood scored for the Chargers in Tuesday’s Sunset Conference crossover match at Edison High.

Abbi Ingalls excelled at center back for Edison (8-4-2), which hosts rival Fountain Valley on Thursday.

Laguna Beach (2-3-2) hosts Los Alamitos on Thursday.

Estancia 6, Orange 1: The Eagles routed the visiting Panthers in an Orange Coast League opener Tuesday at Estancia High.

Estancia (3-8) plays at Costa Mesa in the first Battle for the Bell match on Thursday.

Costa Mesa 3, Saddleback 0: The Mustangs shut out the Roadrunners to open Orange Coast League play Tuesday at Costa Mesa High.

Costa Mesa improved to 3-9-2 this season.

WRESTLING

Newport Harbor 57, Laguna Beach 15: The Sailors improved to 5-7 overall and 1-1 in the Wave League with Tuesday’s dual meet victory.
