High School Roundup: Newport Harbor girls’ water polo clinches Surf League title
Bia Mantellato scored three goals to help the Newport Harbor High School girls’ water polo team clinch the outright Surf League championship with an 8-4 win over Los Alamitos Thursday at home.
It’s the first league title since 2015 for the Sailors (13-1, 5-0 in league), the top-ranked team in Division 1.
Alex Love scored two goals for Newport Harbor, which led 6-1 at halftime. Taylor Smith, Morgan Netherton and Avery Montiel each had one goal, and Anna Reed made five saves.
Los Alamitos, tied for third in the Division 1 poll, is now 13-4, 2-2 in league.
Laguna Beach 13, Corona del Mar 9: Ava Knepper scored six goals for the Breakers in Thursday’s Surf League match at Newport Harbor High.
Ava Houlahan scored three goals for the Breakers (14-3, 2-2), who are ranked No. 2 in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 poll. Lela McCarroll scored twice, and Charlotte Riches drew five exclusions and one penalty shot.
Goalkeeper Lauren Schneider had six saves and two assists for Laguna Beach, which pulled away after the score was tied 7-7 at halftime.
Emily Cloherty scored three goals for No. 8-ranked CdM (8-9, 0-5). Makena Macedo and Aliyah Cohen added two goals each.
Costa Mesa 20, Orange 6: The Mustangs cruised to a win in their Orange Coast League opener on the road Thursday.
Edison 9, Fountain Valley 2: Gabby Kelly scored four goals for the Chargers in Thursday’s Wave League match at Newport Harbor High.
Lily Larson, Madison Emerson, Bella Schulze and Bridget Angelovic also scored for the first-place Chargers (7-7, 3-0 in league), ranked No. 4 in Division 2.
Fountain Valley fell to 10-7 overall and 0-3 in league.
WRESTLING
The Corona del Mar High School wrestling team finished first in the Newport-Mesa District Championships on Thursday at Estancia High School.
The Sea Kings went 3-0 in the tournament, defeating rival and runner-up Newport Harbor by a score of 60-21. Other results for CdM (10-1) included a 66-6 win over Estancia and a 69-6 victory versus Costa Mesa.
Newport Harbor (8-8) went 2-1 at the event, earning a pair of wins against Costa Mesa 47-27 and Estancia 52-10.
Costa Mesa placed third in the tournament, and Estancia was fourth.
GIRLS’ SOCCER
Costa Mesa 4, Saddleback 0: Kyra Kirsch scored twice for the Mustangs on Thursday in an Orange Coast League match on the road.
Bryanna Elias had a goal and an assist, and Itzel Ramirez also scored a goal for Costa Mesa (7-9-2, 5-0). Ana Baltazar, Jayde Rubright and Brianna Calderon each had one assist.
Goalkeepers Lucero Islas and Layla Cash combined on the shutout for the Mustangs.
Edison 3, Marina 2: The visiting Chargers rallied from a two-goal deficit to win Thursday’s Sunset Conference crossover match at Marina High.
Alex Wood scored twice for Edison (12-5-2), and Madison Signor also scored.
Giselle Barragan and Aspen Castillo had the goals for Marina (5-6-2).
Crossover play continues Tuesday, when Edison travels to Newport Harbor and Marina hosts Los Alamitos.
Estancia 3, Orange 0: The Eagles snapped a three-match losing streak with Thursday’s Orange Coast League road win.
Estancia (5-11, 3-3) hosts Costa Mesa in the second Battle for the Bell match on Tuesday.
Los Alamitos 5, Fountain Valley 0: The Barons fell to 5-8-3 after dropping Thursday’s Sunset Conference crossover match on the road.
Huntington Beach 2, Laguna Beach 0: Emily Leahy and Ashley Fujimori scored for the Oilers in Thursday’s Sunset Conference crossover match at Huntington Beach High.
Brooke Spahr and Liz Johnson each had an assist for Huntington Beach (9-8-4), which plays at Fountain Valley on Tuesday.
Laguna Beach (3-7-2) hosts CdM on Tuesday.
GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
Saddleback 58, Costa Mesa 32: The Mustangs took their third straight loss to open Orange Coast League play on Thursday on the road.
Costa Mesa dropped to 3-7 overall and 0-3 in league.
Los Alamitos 60, Edison 31: Mia Cassel had a team-high 15 points for the visiting Chargers on Thursday in a Sunset Conference crossover game.
Andie Cliff made two three-pointers to account for her six points for Edison (8-15).
Fountain Valley 53, Marina 9: Audrey Tengan had 23 points to lead the visiting Barons in Thursday’s Sunset Conference crossover game.
Margaret Tengan added 13 points, Mary Nguyen scored five points and Sarah Henry chipped in with four points for Fountain Valley (13-4).
Marina (5-16) has lost its last nine games.
Huntington Beach 44, Laguna Beach 39: Sophie Marriner had 20 points and 21 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough to push the Breakers past the Oilers on Thursday in a Sunset Conference crossover game on the road.
Kate Cheng added 19 points, six rebounds and two blocked shots for Laguna Beach (15-8).
Akemi Tanga had a team-high 14 points for Huntington Beach (9-11), followed by Makenna Tayenaka with 13 points.
Pacifica Christian Orange County 79, Temecula Rancho Christian 45: The Tritons extended their winning streak to seven games on Thursday in a nonleague game on the road.
