Laguna Beach holds ocean lifeguard tryouts

The city of Laguna Beach Marine Safety Department held its seasonal lifeguard tryouts on Saturday at the Main Beach Lifeguard Tower.

Lifeguard hopefuls put themselves through a series of physical tests, beginning at 9 a.m..

Applicants had to complete a 1,000-meter swim in under 20 minutes. Additional tasks included a sprint swim, as well as a run-swim-run segment, where those participating had to run along the beach prior to taking on the ocean, then run once again upon their return to shore.

Kai Bond, the Marine Safety Captain for Laguna Beach, said the city has 30 lifeguard towers, but there are additional positions to be filled.

“We’re looking for as many as possible,” Bond said. “We’re encouraging any and all to sign up and accept the challenge.”

Another round of tryouts will be conducted on Saturday, March 19. Interested individuals must submit their applications by Thursday, March 17 at 5 p.m.
