High School Roundup: CdM boys’ lacrosse blows out Westlake in CIF opener

Ty Caffarelli scored six goals to lead the Corona del Mar High School boys’ lacrosse team to a 14-5 win over Westlake on Wednesday in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs at home.

Nicolas Peloso added four goals for the Sunset League-champion Sea Kings (16-3). Lucas Newton scored twice, and Tucker Jackson and Sam Thompson each had one goal.

Corona del Mar plays at Los Angeles Loyola, a 15-1 winner over Corona Santiago in the first round, in the quarterfinals.

SWIMMING

Corona del Mar junior Maggie Schalow qualified first in both of her individual events Wednesday in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 preliminaries at Marguerite Aquatics Complex in Mission Viejo.

Schalow touched first in the girls’ 200-yard freestyle in 1 minute, 47.38 seconds, as well as the 100 butterfly in 53.88 seconds. The 200 free time was a CdM school record.

CdM’s girls’ 400 freestyle relay team of Schalow, Taylor Park, Alexandra Milisavlijec and Nikki Lahey qualified third in 3:29.83, and the 200 medley relay quartet of Milan Bever, Joyce Chang, Schalow and Jillian Schlom qualified fifth in 1:48.47.

Fountain Valley freshman Kaitlyn Nguyen qualified first in the girls’ 100 breaststroke in 1:03.00, and fifth in the 200 individual medley in 2:04.32.

Laguna Beach junior Jana Jokic also qualified third in the breaststroke in 1:03.95.

Huntington Beach junior Dylan Crane qualified sixth in the boys’ 50 freestyle in 20.95 seconds.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Riverside King 12, Laguna Beach 6: The Breakers’ season ended in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs Wednesday on the road.

Laguna Beach, the Wave League runner-up, finished the season 8-9.

Northwood 15, Sage Hill 3: The San Joaquin League champion Lightning were knocked out in the first round of the Division 1 playoffs Wednesday at home.

Sage Hill ended the season 13-5.

Diamond Bar 16, Huntington Beach 2: The Oilers lost on the road Wednesday in the first round of the Division 2 playoffs.

Huntington Beach, an at-large team from the Surf League, finishes its season 10-10.

Long Beach Poly 14, Costa Mesa 4: The No. 2-seeded Jackrabbits topped the Mustangs on Wednesday in the first round of the Division 4 playoffs at Costa Mesa High.

Costa Mesa, the Orange Coast League champion, concluded its season 12-3.
