High School Roundup: CdM football routs Downey in home opener

Senior quarterback David Rasor threw for 314 yards and three touchdowns, as the Corona del Mar football team defeated Downey 41-10 in a season opener on Friday at Davidson Field.

Rasor committed to UC Davis prior to the season.

Senior wide receiver Cooper Hoch brought in 12 receptions for 122 yards and three touchdowns, while junior wide receiver Russell Weir turned his four grabs into 128 yards for the Sea Kings. Senior tight end Cameron Harty also had seven catches for 55 yards.

Since falling to the Vikings in the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division 4 playoffs in 2017, CdM has played Downey three times in the regular season. The Sea Kings have won all three meetings by a combined score of 134-50.

Backup quarterback Kaleb Annett threw a touchdown pass to Wyatt Lucas. Annett added a short-yardage rushing score of his own.

Mason Kubichek recorded an interception for a touchdown.

Newport Harbor 29, Honolulu (HI) Farrington 7: The reigning Division 6 champions began their season with a big win in Hawaii.

Senior quarterback Colton Joseph had three touchdown passes — all of them going to senior wide receiver Kashton Henjum.

Junior wide receiver Josiah Lamarque also returned a kickoff for a touchdown.

Edison 48, Venice 13: Senior quarterback Parker Awad showcased his precision, completing 15 of 17 passes for 289 yards and four touchdowns in the Chargers’ victory on the road.

Senior wide receiver Ashton Hurley made six catches for 121 yards, and while senior Tucker Tripp and junior Mason York had 74 receiving yards apiece.

Fountain Valley 52, Valencia 14: The visiting Barons blew out the Tigers in a nonleague season opener on Friday night.

Junior quarterback Noa Banua had four touchdown passes for Fountain Valley, sending two of them to senior tight end Scott Peschke. The other two went to wide receivers Luke Taylor and Joey Garcia, a sophomore and senior, respectively.

Senior Ben Pham ran in two scores on the ground, and senior Adrian Esquivel also had a rushing touchdown.

Santa Ana Valley 34, Ocean View 16: Junior Frankie Armenta threw for 191 yards and a touchdown, but the visiting Seahawks let a 16-14 halftime lead slip away in a nonleague season opener on Friday night.

Sophomore Jesse Gomez made seven catches for 85 yards. Sophomore Gaige Prichard caught four passes for 49 yards and a touchdown, and sophomore Haston Allen had a rushing touchdown.

Crean Lutheran 42, Costa Mesa 7: Senior quarterback Garrett Richards threw for 97 yards and a touchdown for the Mustangs in Friday’s nonleague season opener at University High.

Senior wide receiver Riley Weinstein reeled in three passes for 80 yards for Costa Mesa.

Homedale (ID) 46, Laguna Beach 14: Senior running back Trenton Fisher carried the ball 17 times for 153 yards and six touchdowns to lead the host Trojans past the Breakers on Friday in a nonleague game.
