Breakers continue to romp in league

The Laguna Beach boys’ volleyball team improved to 7-0 against Orange Coast League competition Tuesday by scoring a 25-11, 25-13, 25-13 sweep of host Godinez.

It was the first league loss for the Grizzlies.

Robbie McKnight and Austin Hillemann had 12 and nine kills, respectively, Troy Donenfeld had 12 digs and Jack Winn 29 assists for the Breakers, who put their overall record at 14-10.

In a league match Monday, Laguna scored a 25-17, 25-21, 25-19 win at Calvary Chapel. McKnight had 18 kills, Alek Burk 11 kills, Donenfeld 12 digs and Winn 35 assists.

The Breakers are off until April 28, when they play a league match at Godinez.

Boys’ Tennis

Laguna continued its dominant run in the Orange Coast League Tuesday by blanking visiting Saddleback, 18-0. The Breakers lost just two games and outscored the Roadrunners, 108-2.

In previous action, Laguna dropped a close home nonleague match Monday to Cerritos, 10-8, winning four sets in singles and doubles.

Jake Michaels had a strong performance at No. 1 singles against Pilki Min, the Dons’ top player, winning, 6-1. It was the third time that the two have met on the court and Michaels now holds a 2-1 edge against Min. Michaels posted 6-1, 1-6, 6-2 scores.

Beniot Romeo (0-6, 0-6, 6-1) and Teague Hamilton (0-6, 2-6, 6-2) both fell to Min, but each was able to win a set at No. 2 and 3 singles.

In doubles, Hutton McKenna and Morgan Lebby won three sets, two by tiebreaker. The other doubles win came from Nick Le/Will Reeves (1-6, 4-6, 6-2).

At No. 2 doubles, Austin Loomis paired up with Taylor Davidson. Loomis has played all season with Owen Weber, who sat out the match because of a back injury. Loomis and Davidson had scores of 1-6, 2-6, 3-6.

Laguna, now 5-0 in league, is off for spring break next week. The Breakers resume league play April 26, hosting Costa Mesa.

Boys’ Golf

Andrew Palmer earned medalist honors with a 33 as Laguna scored a 193-251 Golden West League win Monday over Loara at Aliso Creek Golf Course.

The Breakers, 8-2 overall, are off until April 25, when they resume league play against Estancia at Aliso Viejo Country Club.

Swimming

The program recognized its senior team members at the start of Laguna’s final home meet of the season, a Wednesday Orange Coast League meet against Godinez. Each senior received an orchid lei and the Breakers closed out their home stand in style by winning across the board. At the varsity level, the Laguna girls won, 118-54, the boys’ by a 104-65 count. The Breakers placed first in every varsity event, although the boys’ 200 medley relay team was disqualified.

Coach Kari Johnson said that “great swims” were turned in by varsity members Yoshi Andersen (200 individual medley, two minutes 0.82 seconds, first place); Taylor Capobianco (200 free, 2:04.63, first); Melena Masson (500, 5:30.17, first) and Lila Vera (100 butterfly, 1:00.80, first) of the girls’ team, and Nicky Brunner (200 free, 1:56.63, first); Billy Wild (100 butterfly, 55.56, first) and Nolan McConnell (100 free, 51.39).

The Breakers have their final league meet April 27 at Costa Mesa.

Track and Field

Laguna competes Saturday at the Orange County Championships and will host the Laguna Beach Relays on April 28.
