High School Roundup: Laguna swim teams perfect in OCL

The Laguna Beach High boys’ and girls’ swim teams completed perfect Orange Coast League dual meet seasons and both repeated as dual meet champions after each defeated Saddleback Wednesday.

The Laguna girls claimed their sixth consecutive league dual meet crown by defeating the Roadrunners, 132-29. The boys’ team made it five straight dual meet titles by winning, 134-36.

Both teams finished their league dual meet season 5-0.

“I am proud of the kids and I am looking forward to seeing them swim well at league,” Laguna Coach Kari Johnson said.

Both Laguna teams will go after the overall Orange Coast League title when they compete next week at the OCL Championships at Costa Mesa High. The league prelims are Tuesday and league finals are Thursday. Both events start at 2 p.m.

The CIF Southern Section prelims are May 8 and the division finals are May 9, at Riverside Community College.

Boys’ Tennis

The Laguna Beach boys’ tennis team got back on the winning track in Orange Coast League play Tuesday by rolling past Godinez, 17-1.

Teague Hamilton won, 6-0, at No. 1 singles and was subbed by Jeff Spitz, who posted 6-4, 6-4 wins. Morgan Lebby swept by 6-0 scores at No. 2 singles and No. 3 Zach Pratto won two of three sets (2-6, 6-0, 6-0).

Laguna, ranked No. 5 in CIF Southern Section Division 4, swept across the board in doubles play. The No. 1 team of Oliver Nasiell/Ryan Gee won 6-0, 6-2, 6-0. The No. 2 team of Alex Duong/Owen Weber won 6-0, 6-0, and Duong/Jared Boetes won the third set at No. 2 doubles by a 6-0 score. Matthew Meisberger/Tim Nguyen took 7-5, 6-1 sets, and Nguyen/Andrew Koumas won the third set, 6-0, at No. 3 doubles.

The Breakers had dropped their only OCL match on April 9 to Estancia.

In a nonleague match Monday, Laguna fell, 11-7, to Beckman, the 10th-ranked team in Division 1. Hamilton (6-0, 6-2, 6-0) and Lebby (6-2, 6-2, 6-3) swept their opponents.

The Breakers also played a nonleague match April 18 against Palm Springs and edged the visiting Indians, 10-8. Hamilton won his two singles sets (6-0, 6-0) and the doubles teams of Nasiell/Gee (6-2, 6-3, 4-6) and Meisberger/Nguyen (1-6, 6-4, 6-1) won two sets each.

Hamilton, Lebby and Gee are in Ojai this weekend for the 113th edition of the Ojai Tennis Tournament, which started Thursday. Hamilton is competing in singles play and Lebby and Gee are teamed in doubles play.

The Breakers also ended their OCL schedule on Thursday against Costa Mesa. The score wasn’t available at press time.

The OCL tournament starts with prelims play Wednesday and continues with finals action Thursday at Costa Mesa Tennis Center.

Softball

The Breakers improved to 2-3 in Orange Coast League play Tuesday by defeating host Costa Mesa, 12-6. Cory Kent went three for five with three runs batted in and Halle Redfearn also went three for five with an RBI to key an offense that produced 16 hits and drew five walks. Haley Putnam struck out five and got the pitching win.

Laguna (5-14 overall) previously dropped an 11-3 league game on April 10 to visiting Godinez. Putnam went three for four, Kent had a hit, sacrifice fly and stolen base, and Veronica Clancy had a hit and drove in two runs.

The Breakers played Saddleback Thursday. The score wasn’t available at press time. They play host to Estancia at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Thurston Middle School, and take on Calvary Chapel at 3:15 p.m. Thursday at TeWinkle Park in Costa Mesa.

Track and Field

The Breakers’ girls’ and boys’ teams split their Orange Coast League dual meets with visiting Godinez on April 18. The girls’ team edged the Grizzlies, 60-57, and the boys’ team lost, 71-56.

Laguna is the host for the Orange Coast League Championships next week. The league prelims start at 2 p.m. Monday. League finals are Thursday.
