Laguna 14s win South Pac Age-Group title

The Laguna Beach girls’ 14-and-under water polo team won the Southern Pacific Age Group Championships last weekend at the William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Center in Irvine.

Laguna started tourney play Sunday and collected two wins. The first was a 10-6 decision over International of Los Alamitos. The second came by a 9-5 score against Northwood of Irvine. The two wins put Laguna in Sunday’s semifinals.

In the semifinals, Laguna knocked off Corona del Mar, 10-5, to set up a showdown with SET of Saddleback/El Toro, for the championship. In the title game, Laguna jumped out to an 11-6 halftime lead, held off a third-quarter surge by SET and came away with a 13-10 victory.

Laguna is idle until 2013. The team’s next event is the Santa Barbara Tournament Jan. 19-20.

The Laguna girls’ 14U team is: Angelique Begay, Danielle Borelli, Evie Cant, Audrey Duffy, Alana Evans, Aria Fischer, Katya Cox-Kruger, Sophia Lucas, Isabel Riches, Joie Selin, Evan Tingler, Thea Walsh and Kayla Whitelock. The team is coached by Erich Fischer and Matt Tingler.
