Breakers running for CIF crowns

The Laguna Beach boys’ and girls’ cross-country teams will compete for Division 4 team championships Saturday at the CIF Southern Section Cross-Country Championships at Mount San Antonio College in Walnut.

The boys’ Division 4 final begins at 8:05 a.m. The Breakers will compete against Banning, Big Bear, Crespi, Don Bosco Tech, Fillmore, Harvard-Westlake, JSerra, Maranatha, Morro Bay, Nordhoff, Notre Dame/Sherman Oaks, Paraclete, Salesian, San Marino and Santa Ynez.

The girls’ Division 4 final starts at 8:45 a.m. The Breakers will go up against Bishop Montgomery, El Segundo, Flintridge Sacred Heart, Harvard-Westlake, JSerra, La Reina, Maranatha, Marlborough, Mayfield, Morro Bay, Notre Dame/Sherman Oaks, Oaks Christian, Paraclete, St. Joseph/Santa Maria and Valley Christian/Cerritos.

At last Saturday’s Division 4 prelims at Mt. SAC, the Laguna boys competed in Heat 2. Senior Matt Neev took first place with a time of 15 minutes 49 seconds. He finished comfortably ahead of second-place Gustavo Sanchez of Nordhoff, who ran a 16:16.

Laguna finished fourth in the Heat 2 team standings behind Harvard-Westlake, Salesian and Notre Dame/Sherman Oaks. Crespi won Heat 1.

In the girls’ Division Heat 2 event, Laguna finished fifth behind El Segundo, Harvard-Westlake, Maranatha and Bishop Montgomery.
