Youth Scene: Laguna girls move to 8-0
The Laguna Beach Breakers girls’ Division 2 team continued their winning ways in National Junior Basketball play by winning two tough games last weekend.
Laguna started the weekend by defeating Niguel Aliso Team 1, 28-17, and then disposed of previously-undefeated Niguel Aliso Team 3, 34-21.
The two wins stretched the Breakers’ overall record to 8-0.
Shanti Nunn, Izzy Meekma and Grace Gilles led the way against Niguel Aliso Team 1 by scoring six points apiece. Piper Naess led all scorers in the game against Niguel Aliso Team 3 with eight points, and Nunn and Meekma both scored six points. Avi Brice contributed four points and some tough defense was provided by Gilles and Amelie Sadler provided tough defense in the second win.
Olivia Shipp, Ella Dartez, Mia Carpino and Pearl Sinclair all made key contributions in both wins.

Boys’ Division 1
Laguna Beach Team 2 44, Laguna Hills 43
Nicholas Lucas hit a free throw with 12 seconds remaining to send the game to overtime, and Zack Bonnin hit a big, three-point shot in OT, to help lead the Breakers to a one-point victory.
The Breakers’ Noah Handel led the team with 19 points while Joe Sweet added seven points to go along with his typical strong defensive play.
The Breakers play Saturday at Laguna Hills.

Boys’ Fifth-Grade All-Net
Yorba Linda 58, Laguna Beach 38
Laguna’s fifth-grade All-Net team lost to a talented Yorba Linda Puma team. The Breakers got off to a hot start with great passing and team play during a first quarter that ended in a tie score. The speed and size of the Pumas eventually wore down the Breakers down the stretch.
Nolan Naess led the Breakers with 14 points followed by 13 points from Jack Payne and seven points from Gavin Trevino. Will Compton, Griffin Kristensen, Booker Frith and Alex Neufeld added stellar guard play while Henry Miller and Ryan Anthony helped on the boards.
The Breakers, 4-2 on the season, play in the Tier One Division of All-Net and will play eight games over the next three weekends.

Girls’ Division 3
Laguna Beach 28, Aliso Niguel Team 2 11
Haley Hahn and Genoa Rossi both scored 10 points Saturday as the Breakers started a two-game weekend with a victory.
Laguna Beach 23, Aliso Niguel 6
A big defensive effort paved the way for a decisive win Sunday by the Breakers who remained undefeated for the season. Maggie Meekma, London Boyd and Haley Hahn led the team in rebounding, and point guard Lucy Loughlin had nine steals.
