Briefs: U.S. to host FINA water polo event

USA Water Polo will host the 2015 FINA Men’s Intercontinental Water Polo Tournament. The event, which will feature the USA Water Polo Men’s Senior National Team as host, will be held March 30-April 4 at Corona del Mar High.

Nolan McConnell (Laguna Beach High/Long Beach St.) is a member of the USA Men’s Senior National Team.

Teams scheduled to compete at the FINA Men’s Intercontinental Water Polo Tournament are: the USA Men’s Senior National Team, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Japan, and Kazakhstan. Tickets for the tournament will go on sale in February.

The tournament will serve as a qualifier for countries outside of Europe for the FINA World League Super Final scheduled for June 23-28 in Bergamo, Italy.

McConnell also is on the USA White team roster in the USA Water Polo Men’s National League. The second week of the league season will be played Feb. 7-8 in Northern California.

On Tuesday, the USA Men’s Senior National Team was defeated, 13-10, by Australia in the first of three exhibition matches in Perth, Australia. The teams met again on Thursday and conclude their three-game series on Saturday.

Volleyball tourney dates announced

Several dates have been announced for the 2015 season for Laguna Open Beach Volleyball at Main Street Beach.

The first tournament, the Laguna Women’s Open, will be held May 9. Other upcoming tournaments include: Laguna Men’s Open, June 6-7; Girls’ 16-and-Under Tournament, July 9; Girls’ 14-and-Under Tournament, July 10; King and Queen tournaments (October, TBA); Holiday 4-Man Tournament (December, TBA).
