Youth Scene: NJB Breakers take first place
The Laguna Beach Girls’ Division 1 Breakers concluded their National Junior Basketball season last weekend by winning twice to claim first place in their division.
In a hard-fought defensive battle on Saturday at Thurston Middle School in Laguna Beach, the Breakers led from start to finish in defeating visiting Capo Dana, 20-14. Izzy Meekma scored the first basket of the game and Molly Cohn scored 10 points and Piper Naess had eight points. The defense of Avalon Brice and Kate Calderas on Capo Dana’s best player was a key to the game.
Laguna was involved in another defensive battle on Sunday against host Laguna Hills and behind a solid team effort, took a 22-14 victory from the Lady Hawks at the Laguna Hills Community Center. Cohn and Naess led the way with eight points each, Meekma had four points, and Olivia Shipp chipped in two points. Shipp, Emmalisa Randrupand Macy Michaels provided stingy defense throughout the game for the Breakers.
Sunday’s win improved Laguna’s record to 7-3.

Boys’ Division 2
Laguna Beach3 38, Mission Viejo1 32: Matt Berk led the scoring with 18 points as Laguna Beach3 won its sixth game of the season on Saturday at the Laguna Hills Community Center.
Other scoring for Laguna, which improved to 6-1, came from Taro Sakai who contributed seven points, Chase Hall with six points, James Kimball four points and Ben Kelly three points.

Boys’ Sixth-Grade All-Net
Laguna Beach 68, Niguel Aliso 49: Laguna shot lights out Saturday in posting a big win over the Wolverines. The 68 points scored is the league high for any team in the division this season.
Jack Payne’s red-hot shooting led to a team-high 24 points followed by 18 points from Nolan Naess. Will Compton distributed the ball throughout the game to his Laguna teammates who also reached the scoring column. Paxton Burzell scored eight points, Gavin Trevino six points, and Willie Rounaghi and Ryan Anthony both had five points.
Arthur Rounaghi and George Williams, key members of the team, were unable to play Saturday.
The win put the Breakers at 10-8 overall. They close out their season with three games this weekend.

Youth Football
The Wolverines won the Second/Third Grade Division title of the Laguna Beach Flag Football League on Sunday in championship playoff action at Laguna Beach High’s Guyer Field.
The Wolverines, led by head coach Jeannie Gambino and assistant coach Chris Tyson, won their opening playoff game, 32-0, over the Aztecs. They went on to defeat the Miners, 24-6, in the championship game.
The Wolverines completed an undefeated season (7-0).
The Wolverines are: Mason Bruderer, Davis Dix, John Dix, Teddy Dworakowski, Jaxson Hutcheon, Gabe Lewis, Finn Markey, Leo Pardun, and Chase Tyson.
