High School Swimming: Breakers open with big wins

The Laguna Beach boys’ and girls’ swim teams opened their 2015 seasons Tuesday, and both squads posted big victories over visiting Garden Grove Pacifica. The boys’ team won, 109-59, and the girls’ team won, 108-61.

The first-place finishes for both Laguna teams:

Boys: 200 medley relay (Erik Juliusson, Cameron Karkosa, Max Morgan, Cade Baldridge, 1:42.71); 200 freestyle (Ben Greenwood, 1:53.41); 200 individual medley (Max Morgan, 2:03.13); 50 free (Max Morgan, 22.91); 100 free (Cameron Karkosa, 47.09); 500 free (Ben Greenwood, 5:19.70); 200 free relay (Nolan Del Toro, Camden Benson, Billy Renner, Jack Dodson, 1:36.24); 100 backstroke (Erik Juliusson, 53.55, CIF automatic qualifying time); 100 breaststroke (Cameron Karkosa, 1:00.82); 400 free relay (Max Morgan, Cade Baldridge, Cameron Karkosa, Erik Juliusson, 3:22.09).

Girls: 200-yard medley relay (Harper Dix, Abby Cohn, Kasey Karkosa, Bella Baldridge, 1:55.54); 200 free (Kirra Nash, 2:13.24); 200 IM (Kasey Karkosa, 2:10.05, CIF automatic time); 50 free (Bella Baldridge, 26.86); 100 butterfly (Kasey Karkosa, 58-26, CIF automatic time); 100 free (Bella Baldridge, 59.04); 500 free (Kirra Nash, 5:49.79); 200 free relay (Bella Baldridge, Natalie Selin, Harper Dix, Kasey Karkosa, 1:46.49); 100 backstroke (Harper Dix, 1:00.19, CIF automatic time); 100 breaststroke (Abby Cohn, 1:15.86).

Both Laguna teams had big success last year. Both won Orange Coast League championships and competed at the CIF-SS Division 3 Championships where the boys finished runner-up to the title and the girls finished 12th in the team standings.

This year, the Breakers are competing in Division 2.

Coaches’ take: “Beth (Weber) and I are excited for another amazing season,” Johnson said. “There are so many talented athletes on our team and we can’t wait to see what they accomplish this year.”
