High School Roundup: Laguna boys tie for ninth in CIF golf event

In a year when it won an Orange Coast League championship, the Laguna Beach High boys’ golf team competed Monday at the CIF Southern Section Southern Division Team championship.

The Breakers shot a team score of 397 and finished tied for ninth place. Eighteen teams competed for the title, won by Marina, at Mile Square Park (par 72) in Fountain Valley. The Vikings shot an even-par 360 (team score) and edged Sunny Hills (361) and Long Beach Wilson (362) to win the crown.

Posting scores from the Breakers were John Grayden (72), Drake Dvorak (76), Max Brown (79), Kyle Sharp (84), Ben Sharp (86), and Will Uzelac (91).

“The guys played great as a team and this is one of our best finishes since I have been the coach,” Scott Finn said. “I’m really proud of how our guys battled throughout the season to compete and give their best effort.

“The season is a big commitment and our guys made it a priority which shows in the success they had.”

Grayden previously competed at the CIF Individuals tournament May 11 at Skylinks Golf Course in Long Beach. He shot 74 (73 cut) but did not advance.

Track and Field

The Breakers competed last Saturday at the CIF Track and Field Championships Division 4 prelims meet at Carpinteria High. In the girls’ competition, Coco Putnam won the 300-meter hurdles in 44.58 seconds and was fifth (57.88) in the 400-meter dash.

Boys: 4x100-meter relay (46.70, 29th); 110-meter hurdles (Charles Warner, 16.20, 10th); 400-meter dash (Cale Airey, 52.22, 17th; Daniel Peterson, 53.53, 24th); 100-meter dash (Callan Cochran, 11.28, 10th); 800-meter run (Cameron Zuziak, 2:03.84, 13th); 300-meter hurdles (Cale Airey, 43.03, 14th); 3,200-meter run (Grant Barton, 10:05.38, 17th); 4x400-meter relay (3:39.65, 20th); High jump (Charles Warner, 5-10, 15th); Shot put (Nathen Wyle, 42-1, 18th).

The CIF-SS Track and Field Championships are Saturday at Cerritos College in Norwalk.

Surfing

The Breakers competed Saturday at the Scholastic Surf Series High School State Championships at San Onofre State Beach, taking on San Dieguito, San Clemente and Carlsbad in the team competition.

The Breakers, coached by Scott Finn and Alisa Cairns, also competed Monday at the Individual competition of the championships. Spencer Davis reached the finals and finished in sixth place in the Coed Bodyboard division. Zach Levine reached the quarterfinals and finished 10th in Boys’ Shortboard.

The Scholastic Surf Series also announced its overall team and individual ratings winners for the five-event series. Laguna took first place in the Orange County High School division with top finishes in the Boys’ Shortboard division, Girls’ Shortboard and Longboard divisions, and Coed Bodyboard division.
